Lowell Thomas anyone?

I was out rose shopping today and came across this one. I'd never heard of it before but the photo on the package was of a lovely bright yellow HT and I liked it. So I came home and looked it up before purchasing it and it's OLD, lol, like bred in 1943 old! Does anyone grow? What can you tell me about it?

Interesting I was just looking up that rose today. I saw it at Lowe's and it caught my eye along with Sunflare. I couldn't find much information on either one.

Watch for black spot if that's an issue there. LT can be fairly tall in milder climates. I don't know what to tell you to expect in yours as I haven't gardened in it. Here, where it's HOT, the color lasts nearly a day before fading very light and the form is almost as fleeting. Nearly 70 years ago, it was considered a "good yellow". Fortunately, there has been much progress made with yellow roses in the past seven decades. There isn't much fragrance. It's a nice museum piece. Kim

I grew Lowell Thomas about 20 years ago. Never got very big so took it out after about 3 years and put in Sun Goddess, another yellow you won't find very often.

I found it at Lowes too, Mori, but didn't just buy it. Glad now that I didn't because black spot is my worst problem around here.

Thanks for the info, Kim and moro!

I didn't get it either but I did get Old Timer after reading all the wonderful review. Good thing too because there were only three left.

Old Timer is a large flower with huge petals, but best if given afternoon shade. Those large petals blow pretty quickly and can fry in high heat. The color will also last quite a bit longer if protected from the worst of the heat. Kim

Lowell Thomas was named for a man who was a broadcast journalist for CBS radio, among other things. He was also associated with the Lawrence of Arabia TV shows about British Army Capt. T.E. Lawrence.

The rose was an AARS winner for 1944 and was awarded the Portland Gold Medal. It is therefore eligible to be entered in rose show challenge classes where entries have to be AARS winners. I myself have not grown this rose, but I have also seen it for sale.

Thanks Kim for the information. I'll have to changed the spot I had intended for Old Timer. Looks like New Day will have to move but it will probably be happier in the full sun.

I also grew Oldtimer, an apricot/orange hybrid tea. It did not care for the dry heat of our low desert climate and had year-round powdery mildew. I could leave for work in the morning and there would be buds. Came home 9 hrs later and the buds had bloomed, blown and shattered during the day. Otherwise the bush was covered in leaves (white with mildew), nice thick canes and plenty of the aforementioned buds.

Moril: If your Lowes purchase of "Old Timer" was in a plastic bag labeled "Beauty Queen Roses" (from Sexton Roses, Inc. in Tyler, Texas), congratulations on your addition of 'Lowell Thomas' (or some other nondescript yellow rose)!

When I grew the Kordes rose 'Old Timer' in my Washington, DC garden, it was my favorite HT. I've attempted to replace it time and time again. My virus-indexed SPECIAL ORDER twig from Vintage was a nonstarter from the get-go. Then I noticed those bodybags at Lowes. Three times I bought them, and three times I yanked and trashed them. I've concluded that Beauty Queen/Sexton Roses in Tyler, Texas doesn't know 'Old Timer' from squat.

That's one rose I should have dug and transported South.

RE: Lowell Thomas anyone?

Some years ago my local Home Depot had body bag "The Doctor", or so they said. My budded plant from Sequoia was on its last legs as it was old and had been attacked repeatedly by the danged rabbits and gophers. I took the chance and bought the three they had. Two began growth which appeared as if it was Witch's Broom or Round Up damage and were quickly dumped and sent to the landfill. The third grew OK and flowered with perfect, classic Paradise flowers. This was back when Paradise was still under patent which made it appear the grower had dumped patented roses under other names to avoid paying royalties. I've not bought many body bags since. If I wanted Paradise (didn't then, still don't) I would have bought Paradise. Kim
