Head over heels in paradise

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. This morning I fell down the porch stairs, ass end over tea kettle, and did a flying face plant right smack dab in the middle of rosa Paradise. Ms. Paradise is quite large, and quite thorny. Yeah I'm fine, feeling pretty stupid for not watching where I was going. After grabbing one way for my glasses and the other way for my ball cap, I checked her out for injuries before I checked myself out. Three branches broken for her, none for me.

I would do the same thing, worry about the broken rose branches on the rose before I worried about myself. Hey, it could have been worse and you could have landed on concrete! Do yourself a favor and take ibuprofen for a day or two because you always feel worse on the third day after a fall.

Totally understandable, Harmony. :) I think that we derive so much pleasure from growing roses and because the events in our lives happen so quickly, that often we feel we must hurry to keep those rose growing "feel good" chemicals flowing in our brains. I've done the same sort of thing. After chipping a tooth from hurriedly tossing a concrete block from the back yard into the front yard, I learned a little "life lesson" for me. That lesson was "slow motion gets me there faster" and that our well being is more important than our roses which we all love so much. Keep on having fun with your roses because growing them is SO much fun! :)

Yes, I've fallen into a rosebush before and try to remember to keep my head turned away as I fall in. Usually I'm grabbing for a weed and grab a handful of rose thorns instead.

it is mortifying though - last year i fell backwards on a blackcurrant bush, placing my (ahem) generous arse, smack in the middle of it. This year, the poor bush is utterly lopsided and still looks crushed and the fence, where I tried to grapple my way upright, is still leaning into the chicken run.

Scary. I'm glad you're okay.

Paradise will bounce back, I'm sure.

Thank you, Harmonyp, for reporting your fall so we can be more careful. BTW, I love all the pics. you posted - more please (I'm greedy). Campanula had a way of falling down hilariously - she always make me laugh in this forum.

When my kid was 2 years old, she kept falling down constantly. I didn't know she's myopic until she flunked her 2nd grade eye-exam. So I'll focus on low-thorns roses for her sake.

Actually I got quite lucky thorn wise - somehow Paradise's large but not close together thorns didn't cause a single puncture. And indeed she truly was Paradise as she completely broke my fall, which would have been quite a bit nastier had she not been there because I would have landed on the cement walk-way. I did put this in for a little comic relief, just seemed to funny to be true that I landed in Paradise ;) Don't know what the deal is these days - I fall constantly, but really only in the garden which is where I spend the least amount of time on any given day. I think my brain is just too busy processing beautiful things to pay attention, and then the darned puppy is always running off... For some reason these incidents with named roses constantly strike me as funny - perhaps a bit odd on my part. Like the time I was over enthusiastic with pruners and cut off the only bloom on Queen Elisabeth - I was cracking up all day thinking about beheading the queen.

Oh, I did a good one this morning. I have a backpack spray that holds 4 gallons. I put it on by putting it on a lawn chair, then I fill it up and then I sit in the chair and get the straps over my shoulders. Once I have it on, it's ok. But today I was spraying and I saw Louisiana Tea. There was a thread asking about it's fragrance so I tried to bend down to smell the bloom with the backpack on. Well it threw off my center of balance and made me sit down rather hard in the bed. Luckily I didn't sit on anything. But getting up was a chore. I had to take the dang sprayer off and the stand up and try to put it on again.

OMG Buford, don't get me going about the 4 gallon backpack sprayers! I spray for flies in the barn 2x a week all summer with a 4 gallon backpack, and I have done that same thing so many times - landed in mud puddles, manure piles, got stuck on doors. And you can't do a darned thing once you're down without taking it off, and I have to then go put it on something about waist height so I can back into it and put it back on again. I'm eyeballing tha sprayer and the container of bayer advanced disease control I bought the other day. I spray files like a crazy woman. but after reading this thread so long, I'm reluctant to spray the roses. I'm keeping an eye on my first rust year to see how it's progressing. Actually things seem under control except for my 2 last year bareroot St. Joseph's Coat which really look like they need serious spraying...

And Strawberryhill, thanks for the comment about the photos. Glad they are being enjoyed. I was hoping I wasn't putting on too many, and annoying people with slower connection speeds...

Ouch! I'm glad to hear you are OK!

Yes, I've done silly mishaps like this too. And I have to admit that I did check the rose first, lol! If the canes are not completely severed, still a little attached, I've splinted them up with popsicle sticks and florist tape and had some pretty good success with their survival. Then I go take care of me.

RE: Head over heels in paradise

OMG, I am glad you are OK. It's a bonus that 'Paradise' didn't have more breakage, but it's wonderful that you didn't have any breakage !

I was once on a med that made my perception of where I was in the world disappear and I was constantly falling. Since I already have a clumsy nature, I didn't need anything that made me fall more than I already do on a regular basis. That med is now gone and I have learned to slow down so there are not as many falls in my life.

I also enjoy your ability to have a sense of humor about your mishap. Take care.

Smiles,
Lyn

One day when I was in my mid-twenties, I suddenly looked at a window in my mom's house that faced her garden and asked her: " Did I fall through that window at one time?" She replied: "there's no way you could remember that"
She said there was a rose planted just below the window and I fell through and dropped into the plant when I was about a year and a half old. I probably remembered it because it was a traumatic event but I like to think I fell in love with roses at an early age.

Good thing you have a sense of humor-----thank goodness the rose broke your fall-----When I read your title I was expecting to read about a "love affair"----LOL---

Gives "Falling for roses" a new meaning.

Seriously, what matters is that you are okay and not injured. A garden buddy just slipped in the garden and completely shattered her wrist. 9 metal pins in there and a plate. Not fun. Not good.
