| I remember having such a thing and it was a simple device T shaped metal you just pushed into the soil and out came a core of soil! I've lost it and now when I Google it I come up with really serious stuff costing big bucks!
Where to get the cheap one?

I have used a tulip bulb planter....yes it takes a lot bigger sample but just dump it in a 5 gal pail, mix & take your 1-2 cup sample out of there to send in.

Or try an apple corer. That wouldn't take as big a chunk out.

I've this wild idea to get lime deeper in the soil, (the root zone), to dissolve lime in water and pour it down the hole. Probably liquid fertilizer too.

It's a thought, Jim. I'm just wondering if by sinking it in deeper it won't just move down through the soil even faster and disappear? I think by adding it to the surface it lasts in the root ball zone for a longer time.

I'm doubtful as well but I've lost so many roses I've begun to wonder, about a third af those I've planted die or fail to thrive . Lately I've fantasized that this new way will suddenly bring new life to duds. Ill let you know what happens. Who knows maybe I'll start making cheap ones!
