I am obsessed w striped roses this year and starting 3 new beds so I've gotten roses I have no experience with. Any inputs on these roses would be greatly appreciated:
George Burns
Scentimental
Rock & Roll
All American Magic
Purple Tiger
Oranges & Lemons

Purple Tiger is a very weak plant. It performs best in a large pot with excellent potting soil and given the best of everything. You can plant it in the ground, but expect it to dwindle down to a one can wonder in a relatively short time, even with the best of everything. It's a gorgeous flower, but a real dawg of a plant. Have you not considered 'Fourth of July'?? I really really love this shapely climber, which repeats for us well, in all but deepest winter. In our COASTAL Southern California garden, it is immune to both rust and mildew. It can, if you have space, be grown as a huge fountaining Shrub.

'Scentimental' is a handsome and vigorous upright Floribunda which was disease-resistant for us in Coastal Southern California.

Bill Hillman grew Oranges & Lemons long ago in the San Gabriel Valley. He complained of its size -- it wanting to be a lanky climber, and I have a recollection that he got little repeat from it.

We grow Tom Carruth's 'Berries and Cream,' and it is disease-resistant for us. A fairly controlled climber. It's been good here most years, had a poor year in 2011, and has been slated for removal. It must have heard us, because it is blooming like mad right now.

Purple Tiger is, as Kim says, an unacceptably weak plant with a beautiful bloom. Not worth the pampering, IMHO, and long gone from here.

I'm bummed about Purple Tiger. It's a new bareroot addition for me this year. But I still have hope. Scentimental is also new as of last year. Planted it late, have great hopes for it this year. Looks really healthy. Perfumed Tiger is going into it's 3rd year now, and it blooms its fool head off. Was small last two years, this year it's close to 4' tall (and wide). Covered with buds. Not so perfumed, but absolutely beautiful with great repeat. I was somewhat afraid of George Burns and Oranges and Lemons in fear of severe fading. Perfumed Tiger barely fades.

I tried Tigress and it was the weakest plant on earth. Someone said Purple Tiger was better so I tried that. Well, it may have been marginally better but it didn't last long.

My cousin has Oranges and Lemons and it's been wonderful for her and blooms a lot. I know several people in my rose society that have it, too, and like it very much.

I have Red Intuition and don't let the fact that it's a florist rose scare you. It's one of the best growing and wintering HTs in my garden. Blooms like a fool and the blooms last for eons!

My other striped rose is the climber Candy Land that I got last spring. It hasn't climbed yet, of course, but it bloomed like crazy last summer and it came through winter green to the tips. Albeit those tips were only 2 feet high, lol. I'm hoping to see it get to 3 feet this season!

Scentimental is a huge bush for me with lots of flowers. I have to prune it back heavily or it will take over the bed. It is pretty disease-resistant for me in Central Coast CA.

Oranges & Lemons does put out tall thick branches and has to be pruned almost to the ground every year. It puts out a lot of flowers at first but not continuously. See my picture of it on the "Orange Roses" post.

That is the only 2 striped ones I have and I like them because they are so different. I always get comments on them. I would love to get Hocus Pocus or Abracadabra to add to my collection.

I have zero experience with it, just purchased today, but Purple Splash is some what similar to the flowers I found for purple tiger (in case you were looking for the color combo)

RE: Stripes

In these parts, Tigress was SUBSTANTIALLY better than Purple Tiger, though it still wasn't what it was supposed to be. Kim

Scentimental was planted last year as a bareroot. The flowers crisped in out heat last year. I am hoping this year being more established it will do better. It is a very vigorous grower.

George burns, best rose we have! No disease whatsoever. Blooms the most, I cant say anything negative about this rose.

Tim, Scentimental crisped in our Santa Ana winds, too.

I thought it might be OK in heat, but not dry, hot wind.

Scentimental is a big, healthy bush that pumps out blooms on a steady rate. It has to. The blooms last, maybe 2 days at best. They are beautiful while they are there. Rock & Roll is a good healthy bush. The blooms are big and beautiful in cool weather. Up in my neighborhood when it got summer warm, it almost stopped growing & blooming. The few blooms it did manage were very small and ugly. Mine is in the "give away" area of the garden. Any takers???

GEORGE BURNS does really well for me. Blooms alot and repeats pretty well. Stays about 3ftx3ft.

SCENTIMENTAL is a pretty good one. Doesn't repeat as well as GB and blows a little fast sometimes. Bush is about 4ftx3ft.

ROCK & ROLL I have not had much luck with so far, but it's planted in a bad spot I think. I've seen gorgeous pics from other people, so I must be good somewhere!!

ALL AMERICAN MAGIC is pretty, blooms are smaller and really interesting. Not great repeat so far.

I've had PURPLE TIGER for over 12yrs, and it's still a small plant. Reaches maybe 3ftx2ft at most. It always dies back halfway or so, and renews itself. Doesn't bloom as much as I'd like.

ORANGES 'N' LEMONS I've had for many yrs also. It doesn't repeat very well but when it blooms it's pretty. Grows about 4-5ftx3ft.

You might want to try MARVELLE aka TROPICAL SUNSET. That's a great rose. Averages about 4-5ftx3-4ft, and blooms like crazy!

I have a ton of striped roses, many not available anywhere anymore. They're my favorites, after the oddballs.

Careless Love is a splendid rose, as are all the Radiance group. However, I am not sure if it is available this year.

Ralph Moore's Shadow Dancer makes a spectacular display at the Portland Rose Garden. I think Burlington may have it.

You should be able to grow Mme. Driot in zone 8. The tops of the petals are striped, and the backs are solid colored. For me it was lovely and had very good rebloom, much better than many other climbing HTs.

RE: Stripes

My Rock N' Roll is only in it's second year but really thriving. Had some issues with BS last year but so did every rose of mine after such a wet spring. Smaller blooms but numerous in nature.

George Burns in new in my garden but such a unique and wonderful smelling bloom. Staying nice and compact so far.

RE: Stripes

This is actually kind of funny for me to read -- My purple tiger is planted in the ground in a less than perfect spot (fairly shady) and it is healthy as a horse, albeit not particularly tall. On the other hand, I got rid of Oranges and Lemones, because it was a tall, gangly plant that was essentially a once a year bloomer.

I have grown all of the stripes listed in the above posts. I also got rid of Scentimental because the blooms shatter too quick -- now you see it, now you don't, is what I used to call it.

All of others are acceptable plants from my perspective. I particularly like All American Magic. I also recommend both Fourth of July and Berries N Cream and the newer one called Purple Splash, which is an outstanding plant.
