Strange New Growth???

Please tell me if this new growth, which seems suspicious because it appears at the soil level beside the rose bush, is the invasive rose disease. Can't think of the name right now....but I'm ready to dig it up!

Is it a grafted rose? Looks like new growth from the root stock.

No, it is not a disease. Those are rose suckers, and most probably from the rootstock. Or, now that I notice it, there appear to be bits of old dead rose cane near this new growth - are they growing right out of the dirt, or out of an ancient old base of a rose? In either case, they are perfectly healthy, and if you wait awhile they will bloom, and you can post pictures, and we can find out who they are.

Rose rosette disease does not start underground. Usually it starts in a side shoot coming from a leaf axil. Those are possible rootstock suckers, but I never saw three emerge at once. Wait till the lowest leaves green up and then compare all their characteristics to mature leaves on the main plant. They look OK so far.

O.P. may be asking about the really odd almost shredded string like new grown coming out immediately down from the last year's cane. It's pink.

It's really strange. What's it like if the mulch is pulled away from it gently?

ok, thanks to all for the confirmation of new growth NOT being a disease. I'll just give it some time, if the flower is different than the original rose. then I assume it is growth from which the rose is grafted from. And yes....I have a sawfly problem...need to spay for that too...... :(

If this is a grafted rose and the graft has been buried deeply, as it appears to be because I don't see it anywhere, then these could just be new basal canes coming up from the graft. The only way to know if it is the rose variety or the root stock is to let it grow and bloom or to dig down to where it is coming from to see if it is above or below the graft. And that ain't easy to do with doing damage. I'd let it grow.

Ann, I think that pinkish fuzzy stuff is just debris on the ground. Looks like a bit of shredded coir to me.

I thought the pink fuzzy stuff was trash, but if part of the plant, then it is strange new growth indeed.

Sorry everybody....the 'pink fuzzy stuff' is just TRASH. :)

Thanks for all the great help!
