How much die-back is too much on grafted?

I've got a grafted rose that had a lot of winter kill. Most canes are dead all the way down. I've got one 3" nub of a cane that has a bit of green. Graft was buried, but not too deep. Own root would have been fine, but don't know if this is too much for it to turnaround. Thanks!

Grafted roses tend to rebound a LOT better than own-roots because they have the benefit of a rootstock to push growth. So long as there is something growing, it stands a chance.

Went to my rose society pruning demo. They were cutting some of their grafteds back to the bud union without a blink....Worth a shot anyway.

As long as you have a bit of life in the canes above the graft, there is hope. After the horrible winter of 2010,I lost many new roses, but some did make it, and I clearly remember that I was obliged to cut them back to mere stubs of canes over the graft.Give it a try....bart

If the graft is buried, even a little, and the cane below ground has green on it you're OK. It will take them a while to build up again but they'll live.

Does the type of rootstock matter?

No.

Many years I cut off dead canes right down to ground level ( I bury my bud union 3-4" below ground) & I rarely lose a rose to winter kill. Be patient with HT's & Gr's as they are slow to wake up. I have both mf & Dr. Huey rootstock & don't see a big difference in either one in my z4 garden.
