I have no idea what to do about a very vigorously growing rose in my garden. Just a year ago it was a sad little guy doing its best to survive as it is tucked behind a large stand of pampas grass. I trellised it trying to give a place to climb up into the sunlight. Now it is ridiculously tall ( as tall as my house) and is cascading outwards like a waterfall. I can't control this thing. If I cut it, it gets black spots, if I leave it be, it grows unchecked. I have no idea what the variety is. It was inherited with the house. Any ideas short of cutting it out completely? I did that with one that was growing in my pine tree and really regret it, so I am not sure I want to go that route.

Coult you tell us what it looks like? Or upload photos? The answer would depend upon what the rose is. Jeri

Probably the original rose died and rootstock is taking over. Olga

Sillytara: Can you post a picture, even if it is not blooming yet? Or, if you cannot do that, please give us a description, as Jeri asked - have you ever seen the blooms? What did they look like - color, approx diameter, single, double (number of petals). Did it bloom only in the Spring, or all summer? Leaves - dark & shiny, or lighter, or mat? What size are they approx? From your zone 8, and your description, it could be any number of roses - how tall is "as tall as my house" - one story? two stories? I have a banksaie lutea which does exactly what you describe as to growing habit, but that is just one of many roses it may be. In order to give you any advice as to how to handle this rose, we really need to figure out what type of rose it is - they all act differently. So, looking forward to hearing from you further - Jackie
