In The Mail Today: Maidens & Plugs

I received two more of my orders in the mail today...and from two completely opposite ends of the retail nursary world: Michigan Bulb and Wisconsin Roses.

Michigan Bulb is of course a mass production nursery, where its kind of hit or miss in my experience. They had a good deal going on and I wanted to see what exactly a "rose plug" was for my own curiosity. Plus I ordered three minis and a clematis (all for under $30). Well a rose plug is exactly what I pictured. They come unpotted in a little baggie and they are barely rooted in one of those seed starting pods made of peat moss. The one I chose was Grand Dame, a hybrid tea I've been eyeing.

Wisconsin Roses on the other hand is very unique in the rose world. Steve sells "Maiden Roses." These are roses he hand grafts onto multiflora rootstock, and its up to you to cut the tops of the multiflora off to make the "bud" take off (a little intimidating since I've never done it before)!

Here's some pics of both of today's arrivals:

The maidens by Wisconsin Roses are a very cost effective way to get hard to find exhibition varieties--it doesn't cost much to ship them. They grow extremely well in our acid soil--a great way of getting exhibition quality blooms for rose shows.

Tammy,
Follow Wisconsin's directions carefully. Friends in a county near us planted them out too early and got back from a weekend in Atlanta and found that not only did their yard have rabbits, but the rabbits really prefer newest canes coming from the budded area.

I saw those plugs on another forum too and they look really good! They're bigger than a lot of bands I've gotten!

Thanks Ann, They're soaking right now, but when I get home from work tonight I think I'm going to pot them in 2 gallon containers until they get a little more established, that way I can keep a closer eye on them :) They're just the strangest looking things! Very interesting!

Yeah, I'd recommend keeping the maiden roses in a pot until they get going. The last one I got I kept on a pot until late summer and then planted it and it did much better than the ones I planted in the ground from the start. The maidens are too delicate to have dogs trampling them.

What interesting pictures.
I know you'll baby them until they branch out and flourish!
