I did a 'no-no'

We have had some discussions in our local rose society about some of them purchasing the "boxed roses" that have many old hybrid teas among them. Actually, they are using them as annuals, knowing they won't survive our lousy winters. I picked up a Tropicana--knowing that I have lost many of them, that it blackspots determinedly, and that it will probably be naked by the end of the summer. Saying all that, I am a glutton for punishment, knowing that I will be rewarded with the blooms that I love--temporarily at best. Are there others that pursue this passion? Interested in knowing if I am the only one. Other than that, I raise the shrubs, but I have even lost some of them. Thanks - Barb

Barb, I've never done it with roses, as rose gardening has only been a hobby for me for a few years now. I do however have to confess I have done that with tropical perenials around my pool area. They don't make it through our winters here in S.C., but oh are they fun to have around the pool in the summer! The local nurseries sell them, so its more than just me that are guilty of it!

Have you tried putting straw hay and burlap over the rose? This is what I do if I got a rose that is not for my zone? If it doesn't make it, I ditch it.
