bud union 1ft above ground? Multicolored Judy Garland?

Hi, I am pretty new to this, and could use some advices.
I inherited 2 rose bushes from the previous owner of a home I recently bought. I have a few questions regarding these bushes.
1.Both of their bud unions are about 1 ft above ground. This quite different from what I learned from browsing the Internet. Is this something I should be worried about?
2.Their root stock are not vertical. In fact one has a roughly 45 degree angle from being vertical. There is a flimsy wooden stick planted right next to the root stock, which I believe are being used as a support. What might be the reasons that they are in such condition? Is this something I should be worried about?
3.After reading this forum, I now think that one of the bushes has Dr. Huey. There is a pretty thick, old cane that comes out of the root of the 'Judy Garland' (this is the name according to the tag that is still hanging on the root stock.) right at the ground level. It bloomed pink flowers, however they don't look very healthy. I was marveling at the fact that the same bush could have multicolored blooms!
But was not quite sure how to prune the Huey portion of the bush. Their leaves look weak and diseased too. The cane looks old and may have been around for a few years. Is there any harm in keeping the cane, I do enjoy seeing more than one color of blooms on the same bush. If it can be kept, how should I prune them? Their leaves and stems look very thin and are quite different from the Judy Garland's.
4.The skins on root stocks appear to be cracking, they look bark-like. I used to see something similar on trees. Is this something I need to worry about?

Thanks for your help!

A suggestion...add your zone number to your GW profile. Lot of us respond primarily to other rose growers in like climates & I personally value advice more from cold climate rose growers because it relates better to my garden.

Hi,

fyi, I live in northern CA, so looks like it is in zone 9?

OK. You don't need Dr. Huey. if you keep that cane, you'll eventually Lose Judy Garland. You need to lose that, right down to the section of root -- underground -- from which it emerges.

No. I've never hear of a bud union a foot above ground. Not sure what to do with that. But I personally wouldn't worry about angle of growth.

Could you post an image of the bark that concerns you?

Hi,

These are the links to the 2 bushes with descriptions.

Would be nice if somebody can confirm it is indeed a Dr Huey.

Your plant sure looks like a tree rose, meaning it would have two bud unions, one to Dr. Huey (perhaps) roots and an intermediate stem, and one from the stem to Judy Garland. 'Judy Garland' is still sold as a 2ft tree rose, couldn't find anything online with 1 ft stems.

I kept thinking that too, a tree rose. A short one, but a tree rose none the less.

Well, I don't think they are tree roses. Here is what the bushes look like

So, are the pink flowers Dr. Huey? Is the cracking and peeling off of the root stock skin a concern? Is it ok for the root stock to tilt so much from the vertical? Any reason for the bud union to be so high above ground?

I've put your pictures into clickable links for you.

If it were me I'd dig them up and replant them deeper. But you're in a much warmer zone than I am so having the graft that high probably isn't as much of a problem for you. In my cold winters it would freeze and die.

When you want to link to a picture go down below the post box and put the address in the "Optional Link URL" box and describe the link in the "Name of the Link" box below it.

OK, some body has to explain to me how you put multiple links in one post, lol?

Put the address in the message box (not the link box below it) and add the following code (with no spaces between--I'm putting spaces in so that the code isn't actually activated and you can read it).

Before the http address, put this--but do leave a space open after the letter "a"--eliminate all the other spaces:

< a h r e f = "

Then after the http address, put this:

">insert here whatever descriptive phrase you want the viewer to read< / a >

Be sure to eliminate all the spaces in the coding, including that final bit containing the "a" after the slant line.

With that coding you can put as many links inside the message box as you wish. Hope my directions are clear.

Kate
