More cold weather protection questions

Posted by mnkitty none (My Page) on

I'm finding the weathermen to be off in their predictions. This is not that unusual, but normally it's no big deal. Now, with my roses it is. The lows were suppose to be in the upper 30s last night, but it ended up being 28. They are predicting upper 20s for the next few nights which probably means lower 20s. I have put sheets and towels on my roses that aren't hardy here, but is a sheet enough? Sheets don't make me that warm. Also, what will happen to my hardy roses that are leafed out I don't plan to cover them at all, should I?

Thank you,
Kitty

I don't cover any of my 400 roses. Most are hardy shrubs and are completely leafed out with a few setting buds. Over the years I've found that, even with temps into the low 20s and teens, any foliage damage is quickly replaced by good leaves. Most often there is no damage. Nature takes care of her own.

Thank you, Jessica. I couldn't figure out how to see that post, but since I did cover the less than hardy roses and a few that might be, there's probably nothing more I could do. I just hope a sheet is warm enough.

Karl, I would love to see a list of your 400 roses. Are any of them hardy in zone 4a? Thank for the encouraging words.

I agree with Karl, we had a cold snap maybe two weeks ago and any damaged foliage is being replaces my new foliage already. The only thing that would upset me is if the buds on my once bloomers were destroyed, but luckily most of my ramblers don't bloom until summer.
