rose wholesaler question

I just came back from a garden club meeting where we went to a local greenhouse for a personal presentation of some of the new plants they were selling this year. One of the owners stopped me because they know I'm a rose person & asked what was going on with J&P Roses (which I didn't have a good answer for)as they had handled them in the past but could not get any this year. They did have a selection hardy shrub roses, minis & Easy Elegance roses but no HT's, Gr's or Fl's which they used to get from J&P. MY QUESTION---where could they get some good quality HT's, Gr's & Fl's wholesale for their store, grafted not own root? (Since we are not in a major metro area, they are not able to order a large volume)

J&P's name has been sold.
The company no longer owns the land where they grew roses.

Your nursery owner can follow a lot of this in industry-oriented posts on line, but a bottom line is that there will no longer be those field-grown J&P roses they once obtained.

Try Weeks.

Is Weeks still independent & I thought Tom Carruth just retired so what's their status?

RE: rose wholesaler question

Weeks is now owned by Gardens Alive. I don't know who is growing their roses, but I can tell you that the bare root roses carrying the Weeks label at my local nursery were ordered two years ago and even tho' they looked to be well budded, I didn't buy any because the roots did not look as viable as bare root roses from Weeks that I had purchased in the past.

I'm assuming at this point in time they would be ordering canned and forced plants as opposed to bareroot. Because of shipping costs, those tend to come from relatively local sources who buy the bareroots around January. If that is where their supply chain has broken, there isn't much they can do about it at this point in time.

If they are looking for bareroots, or bareroots for them to can for next year, tell them to talk to the Canadians. If those are too rich for their blood, what is Bailey's doing nowadays?

Everybody around here switched from J&P to Star about ten years ago when I wasn't looking.

BTW, if a local garden center here never sold another HT, it wouldn't break my heart in the slightest. As a business move, they have had to switch to rugosas and Knock Outs because that's what the customers want to buy. From what I've seen, people will buy HTs if the price is right, but that price point is $15 or less.

When I ordered some things from Parks Seeds a few weeks ago I asked them if they were still affilated with J&P and they said yes, and also Wayside. I know J&P is a mere shell of its former self, but apparently they still have some stock to sell from somewhere.......Maryl

I've bought some this spring from my local nurseries and they were supplied by both Weeks and Star Roses. I haven't seen any with a J&P label on them even at the box stores.

RE: rose wholesaler question

Last weekend I talked to the only local large nursery that used to carry a nice selection of potted roses.

This year? Nothing but KO's. The guy watering the plants said that they decided to purchase only KO's from their supplier. Now whether that was a business decision based on sales numbers or lack of availability I'll never know.

mad gallica...

Surprisingly some HTs do well in some climates. They happen to be the star performers in my garden up here in the mountains. Our nursery is small, over-priced and the only place within a couple of hours drive selling budded roses.

I think HTs will still be offered by some specialty nurseries, own root, but many of them will disappear because they have been tested budded and really are not good roses own root.

The rose world is a-changing.
