I have a large Peter Mayle rose that's about 2 years in the ground. There appears to be a large diameter sucker coming right up the center and putting out Dr. Huey blooms. Please advise how to get at it. Thanks.
Mary

RE: Sucker

Dig down to expose the sucker's base and try to yank out the sucker, tearing at an angle. If that doesn't work, cut flush and then ream out the socket with a knife, or maybe a chisel would help for a very stout sucker. If you just cut it off, it will return.

Michael gave you the best advice. Just make sure you do good damage to where it is coming from so it won't come back.

Thanks. I was afraid I'd hear that. My hands are not up to it at the moment but as soon as I can, I'll attempt.
