Although I've had blooms in my unheated greehouse for 2 weeks already, When pruning today, I found what I thought was a dried bloom from last fall. On closer inspection it turned out to be my first bloom of the year on Rosalie Coral, a miniature climber. This is a full month and a half before I usually get an outdoor bloom in my zone 5a.
I'm just pruning off dead tips, last years dried hips, and any dead wood I find. I want to see how well they bloom with minimal pruning. I never had an opportunity to do this before. By the looks of the potted plants in the greenhouse, I'll be out selling roses in the parking lot in two weeks. This would be a month earlier than normal.
Our rose show is June 16. I may be on my second bloom if things keep up this way. |

| Hi, Karl! Been thinking of you and coincidentally I accidentally hit the Rose Forum button and saw your post :) I just posted my first bloom at the Gallery. Global warming was real strong in Kansas. My roses kept trying to break dormancy all winter long. My tea rose Clementina Carboniera stayed green to the tips in fact the entire rose was green cane'd.... It got styrofoam peanuts as winter protection enclosed in canvas in late January when we got this super cold snap for 2 weeks' worth....Clementina has several tulip formed blooms about to be released, but her first bloom was in April 3...
In Kansas City it's been crazy warm.... The roses are 2 months early in development. My hybrid teas are also showing color behind their closed buds as well. I predict next week Climbing Oklahoma and Folklore will open. Then it will be my Anna De Diesbach which is also showing color. In England we've been comparing First roses to bloom against last year's. Last year for me it was little Distant Drums May 12th then Cornelia, the following week. For Europe, the earlier roses blooming have been Mutabalis, Ard's Rover, Rhapsody in Blue, Ferdinand Pichard, a few rugosas... For other folks in England/Europe it is typically Hugonis in Mid April... They had an unexpected cold snap so theirs seem normal bloomtime so we will soon see. But here in Kansas everything has been abnormally warm. Several |

Thought I just typed a response but can't find it here. Hmmm--let me try again. Karl, congratulations. It is exciting to have roses blooming this early, isn't it! Here in my Zone 6 garden, they've been blooming now for several weeks. The only problem is that I'm so conditioned to watching for late freezes that one corner of my mind keeps predicting one for May 10--just to compensate for this early bloom! Do you have a little voice like that also? LOL In the meantime, let's all enjoy. Kate

No little voice. I get concerned but never worry about it. I can't change or influence the weather. I just accept it. I figure, Nature has handled it all these years and any late freeze is just a little setback in the scheme of thing. I guess surviving acute leukemia and a massive stroke has left me with this acceptance of things. I really think I'm happier for it.

Karl, Buds, no color, in Lexington, KY, zone 6, but at least 4 weeks ahead of the norm.

So glad you're surviving the leukemia, Karl. May you get to be those centenarians! It's amazing how the things we love keep us strong and healed...!

Congratulations, Karl -- Here, we're never really without SOME bloom, but in your colder area, finding a first bloom on Easter really does make a special statement, doesn't it? We may get a little rain later in the week, but today, it's mid-summer hot and dry on my hillside. Even with my allergies, the air smells of sage, lavender, and roses. I hope your Easter has been bright. Jeri in SoCal

Oh, good for you but I'm soooo jealous, lol! I have lots of buds but nothing open yet. I am thinking it will be this month though and that would be the earliest I've ever had a bloom. My previous earliest bloom way May 5, 2010.
RE: First bloom in my 5a garden.

Here in Zone 8, we're getting near the end of our first flush; it was beautiful this year, feel so fortunate with all this rain that we've had. I can't believe how the roses have bounced back from our horrible drought of last summer!
RE: First bloom in my 5a garden.

ogr, I'm really glad to hear that, because there are some TX gardens I want to visit, some time in late May. Jeri

barely a sniff of a bud here (although the UK is zone8). Bulbs were early but everything else seems to be simply ignoring the seductive weather (although ther birds have been at their nesting and mating). At a guess, I am expecting my early yellows to be....well, early - but mutabilis and Mme Gregoire are following up close behind. Then again, Zepherine often surprises me with a late dash on the rails.....

Came home Thursday night past & Denver's Dream had a partially open bud. It's still struggling to open fully. Then the micro, Cindarella, opened over the weekend. So I officially have 1 and a half blooms....hehe. Just like last fall, I've never had stuff blooming during Thanksgiving, and I've never seen roses bloom the 2nd week of April.

ogrose - end of 1st flush - you're kidding - where? I'm just seeing my first blooms in zone 9!
RE: First bloom in my 5a garden.

in Kansas too but in my area all we have is buds. A possible frost might be heading our way today and tomorrow. A light one so nothing major to worry about. I'm hoping the buds will open by this weekend.

So glad you are enjoying these early blooms too! More time to enjoy them, after all, which is wonderful! I never thought when the first growth started on Feb 5th here (4-6 weeks early) that we'd still be looking at the product months later. My garden is heading towards full swing too--many flowers opening and hundreds of buds. The first I've noted a first bloom opened here before is May 6th so we are easily 5 weeks ahead. I got a package from Heirloom Monday and have the plants in the garage overnight as it may dip to 32, but will move them back out tomorrow and hopefully plant this weekend. There has been a bizarre convergence of blooms here, where late daffodils are blooming feet from beds of knockout rose shrubs in full bloom, something I've never seen before. I guess weird may be the new normal now and we just have to roll with the changes, whatever they may be.
