| Hi folks
It struck me the other day that when I see the label for a rose, it always triggers that song in my head if there's a match. Now I don't mind this at all for roses like Mrs. Robinson, or Rockin' Robin, or Chantilly Lace, or Blueberry Hill - heck, I'll even sing back to them when they bloom well ("Oooh, baby thats'a what I like!!). The trouble is when a rose label triggers something you REALLY don't want stuck in your head for the next 4 hours out in the garden. I love Maggie, but I consciously try not to think of Rod Stewart when I see her. And I don't consider it the fault of Souvenir de Louis Amade if he triggers the dreadfully repetitive "Louie Louie", or Delta Gold if she channels Helen Reddy and another "faded rose of days gone by". But I do think I'd draw the line at a rose that makes me get one of the truly dreadful songs stuck in my head, just because it's an unconscious process and nearly impossible to undo once started. The mini "Pina Colada" looks like a lovely flower, but I just couldn't do it because it would leave me beating my head against the sidewalk trying to forget "Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain...". And if they ever name a rose the highly plausible "Night Fever" or even worse, "Tonight's the Night", I know I just couldn't buy it, no matter how lovely and dark red the blooms. We've had discussions in the past about roses you wouldn't plant because they're named after someone or something you don't like, but I think I could avoid that one (though I'm glad Trump Card is a lovely alternative to Rosie O'Donnell). What do you folks think about the song issue? Do you have those stupid song issues with any roses you have, and would you avoid a rose because of them? Just curious!

Follow-Up Postings:
| You're funny! I do start humming, "I found my thrill.." when I look at my Blueberry Hill bush, but I'm keeping it anyway. (Hope the neighbors aren't annoyed!) |
| "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" every time I see Marmalade Skies! IF I find room I want to plant it next to "Yellow Submarine". |
| Okay...so now you got me doing it. And I am a little scared. LOL |
| We all live in a yellow submarine, what a yellow submarine... (in elemantary school we put in 'what' before the next yellow submarine) :) ugh shouldn't have done that now I have that stuck in my head.. thanks colorific...:) |
| Lol, I do this all the time! And not just with roses either. Give me a word and more than likely I'll come up with a song. My favorite rose song is Ricky Nelson's "I went to a Garden Party"! |
| Well, rust, mildew, anthracnose, canker, gall, and black spot make me think of "Man of Constant Sorrow". ;^) |

| How fun! I bought a few new roses today and one is called "Fandango" so all day Bohemian Rhapsody has been running through my head, " Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the Fandango?" :) |
| Climbing Peace. "All We Are Saying Is Give(Climbing)Peace a Chance". |
| I gave Cl. Peace plenty of chances, 6 years worth to be exact, and it never gave me a single bloom! Now it's "bye bye, farewell, so long"! |

| OMG. Oklahoma does it every time! I only know the first line but it still haunts me. |
| Hoovb: Good post. I have seen that movie about 5 times. And I laugh every time. Thanks for the humor! |
| Not until I read this thread. I collected pollen from the rose and all afternoon I've had "Open Arms" running in an endless loop all because of this thread! LOL! Kim |

| When all the roses are blooming and the fragrance fills the yard and the roses have drops of dew on them---- An old hymn fills my heart and head----"In the garden " "I come to the garden alone while the dew is still on the roses" My other favorite is----"A garden in the rain"--the words to this song are beautiful. | Uh-oh, we are all a bad influence on each other! I realized I have Yellow Submarine, Garden Party, and Oklahoma, and now they're on the "danger" list too! At least I like those songs, and hopefully you like Open Arms too, Kim (sorry 'bout triggering that tape loop in your head!). I'm with Kathy that I only know the first line of Oklahoma, and that makes the song all the more wicked since the tape loop is very short: "Oklahoma, where the wind comes sweeping down the plain...dah dah da da dum, de whatsit dum dummy dum, maybe something about rain" My twisted mind is likely to make up new words since I do know the tune: "...where the rose smells sweet, and on my feet are some weeds and irritating BUGGGGGs!" A very dangerous thing, in my opinion... And Florence, by no means would you need to apologize by reminding us of lovely songs to accompany ourselves in the garden! We're all about creating beauty in our little corner of the world, so musical beauty is part of the package, even if it's all in our heads. I'll join you in suggesting some additional NICE songs that my roses also trigger for me, that I go and prune on purpose so they'll counteract the dreadful ones: And the winner? I'd have to say my all-time favorite rose song and movie to get stuck in my head is Singin in the Rain! Oh, the puddle splashing potential of that one - I'll even do that in the front yard where people can see (not that my neighbors would consider much I do in the garden strange any more). On the whole, I'd have to say rose hybridizers come out on top in picking good songs for their roses. One more sign of our collective good taste, obviously (smile). Keep 'em coming - it's now deadheading season so I need something to keep me revved up while making the rounds of 700+ roses! Cynthia |
| Nippstress, I'd totally buy "Night Fever" too lol. Jessica, wish my nursery school taught us The Beatles! Some hits from the 60's, 70's & 80's. I don't have these but they all belong in a bed with Dick Clark to keep them in line, Wish they'd make a Casey Kasem to keep them company too... Fame!- Remember my name |

| It's not a song, but every time I see Julia Child I hear her trilling instructions about how to truss a chicken. Not in the garden, Julia, not in the garden. |
| Luv, luv, luv this thread ~ many of the songs took me back to my kids' era!!! Keep humming ladies & gentlemen!!! |
| Why did I have to read this thread. Now I have "singing in the rain" going in an infinite loop in my head.I used to (well, still do) wonder if I'm a little more "touched" than whatever is "normal" - as it can be days and days before I can get rid of looping head songs. And now, I'm singing in the rain..., I'm singing in the RAIN!!! At least it's a happy tune with a pleasant video image, not backed by a video of some guy grabbing places that shouldn't be grabbed in public! (Of course I had to find a youtube video of Gene Kelly ... ahhhhhhhh....) |
| Peace could bring on the entire John and Yoko box set. Then Secret brings a few too. Was it Herman's Hermits who sang "Listen, Do You Want To Know A Secret"? Try getting that out of your head. |

| When I am pulling out the invasive bamboo that crawls into my rose beds from the slobby neighbors, I get an old Girl Scout camp song stuck in my head, the one about the "Princess Pat." In my version, "a rig a'bamboo" gets replaced by "that friggin' bamboo." |

| I was just out in my garden admiring my big striped periwinkle clematis, with the fuzzy centers, known as "Mr President" .... I can't look at it without hearing a breathless Marilyn Monroe sigh it's name in her birthday tribute to President Kennedy ... (Happy Birthday... Mr. Prezzz - iiii- dent....) It's a voluptuous bloom for sure. |
| Among the more inane things I do upon seeing certain roses, is to utter particular words or phrases -- some of which happen to be song lyrics. There are three of the roses linked below planted next to my compost bin. Every single time I visit that distant part of the garden and see her ever-present and always cheerful blooms, I spontaneously greet her by saying, "Well, coo coo ca-choo to you!" A somewhat wacky lyric fragment from a really terrific song . . . The gardener's compulsive utterances, however, probably qualify as being stupid. |

| Wedding Cake rose...Goin' to the chapel and we're Gonna get married, Goin' to the chapel and we're Gonna get married. That's the only line I know and it stays in my head while I'm out there dead heading. Kasie |
