| I have 3 nice arbors around our fishpond and would like to take out the clematis that is struggling there. There are boxwood hedges right next to the arbors and they probably take a lot of food, so I will have to be diligent about feeding roses. We had New Dawn climbers there which did really well, but my husband removed them because they were horrible to prune-so thorny. I would like to replace with something much less thorny, but would do well. I would consider any color, and would like to just go locally and purchase some packaged roses or inexpensive potted ones, because I will be needing 6 plants. I would prefer a rose which blooms more than once. Home Depot and Lowes have some bagged climbers that are around $8. I am sure they are nothing special. I know I saw Don Juan, Blaze, maybe Josephs Coat. I don't want white, for sure. Thank you! |

| If clematis are struggling there--roses likely will also--box hedges don't require a lot as they are slow-growing. If it was me I would FIRST determine why the clems are not doing well before planting anything new. This will save you $$$$ in the long run! Think of the soil and light/water conditions before any shopping. This is the "infrastructure" for plants. You would not think about curtains or pillows before you have a room to put them in, would you? Same thing with plants... Some things to think about: how long have the clems been there. How were they planted. What is the soil like. How much sun are they getting and how much water. Is there root competition from trees nearby. Is there root competition from the box hedge. |
