| Yesterday the temp. went up to 35 C (95 F) and all the blooms turned blackish at the edges. I planted 2 bushes 6 weeks ago and whenever the temp. is high I get scorched-looking blooms.
HMF doesn't offer any information as to cold or heat tolerance. The description doesn't seem to be updated. It states that the rose will be introduced in 2010. Has anyone here had a similar experience with this rose? It gets shade as of 3 PM & soon it'll get shade as of 1 PM from a nearby tree that's still leafing out. Will that be enough to prevent scorching (summer is only just beginning here). Should I replace it with another dard-red floribunda while the going is still good? Does anyone know such floribunda? Thanks!

| Did you have wind as well as heat? Was the humidity low? Dark red roses, for the most part, will have that problem. When we get Santa Ana winds -- dry, with high temps -- the blooms of 'Prospero' turn into instant potpourri. A few lighter-colored roses are bothered, too. "Grandmother's Hat" has very fragile petals, so they shrivel, at least around the edges. But reds generally speaking are hit disproportionately. Beyond that, your roses only having been in the ground for two weeks, they likely haven't much of a root system yet. If the weather is heating up, I would remove the blooms, and allow the plant to use the water it gets to help it grow roots. Jeri |

| That scorching can easily occur with any rose which has soft, paper petals. Of course, the darker the color, the greater the heat absorption and crisping. Lyn G. has observed that in her high mountain heat, heavier petal substance has often made the difference in all colors of roses. If it helps, most often the heavy petal substance also means the bloom will have little to no fragrance. Kim |

| Many thanks Jeri and Kim. As usual, the two of you are a mine of information and good advice. Jeri - yes, humidity was low, and no, it wasn't a windy day. It was just blazing hot :) |
