This is one of my favorite things about gardening. Let's see: box cutter or serrated knife, screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, and scissors. Don't forget to start with the staples. We can do this thing.

The thing about RU orders is the packaging is absurdly complicated, but there are usually some flowers in there to reward your efforts. (Don't forget to start with the staples.)

Having just gotten mine out of their "secure" shipping carton, I had to chuckle at your take on it Michael. I'd like to see Houdini get out of this one...Lol...Maryl

It took me quite a while to unpack the three plants I got. I received Orangeade,Tramerei, and Nana Mouskouri. I'm amazed I didn't cut myself! |

Wow, you folks put more work into the packaging from Roses Unlimited than I do. My main focus is getting the rose undamaged out of the box, and I've found the less I mess with the box the better I do that (in my experience). All I do is find where the individual small box that holds 4 roses has been taped shut (the small box is stapled within the big box), slice through that packing tape on all 4 corners with a scissors, and gently lift out each of the roses in the small box, leaving it entirely intact and attached to the big box. Occasionally some of the plastic bag around the individual rose will snag on the tape, but that's relatively straightforward to cut loose. Once the roses are out, the whole box with small boxes stapled inside can be recycled as is. Bottom line is that I unpacked around 40 RU roses this spring in about 20 minutes, which is on par with roses from other companies. Most of that time is getting the individual rose wrappings off and seeing them happily watered and nestled in a tray ready for planting. Just an alternative - I do admire all your engineering skills at dismantling the boxes, but I'm woefully poor at that sort of thing. Cynthia

Oh yeah! I get So Excited when they arrive. And you're right - the RU ones usually have blooms peeping out at you! Gardening is great!

Mine came today. I remove the small boxes from the staples by sliding my hand between and pushing gently. Untangling the roses and removing the tape from the small boxes are the biggest problems because gloves are too clumsy and I always get cut by thorns. Eight in the ground, including star of the nile, the pilgrim, strawberry hill, radio times, mary magdelene, lady emma hamilton, sheila's perfume and folklore.

This doesn't apply to RU's packaging, but I think it's funny so I'm sharing it. You know how bareroots sometimes come bundled together tightly in twine, in long boxes? Let's just say it's a bad idea to bend down & cut the tightly pulled twine with a pair of scissors unless you're extremely talented at jumping backwards QUICKLY.
