| Last year I took ground from open yard and carved out a half moon shape for a new rose garden. Planting this year.
I didn't do much special to the soil --- there wasn't much growing there to begin with ---- so I put topsoil over it, and a layer of compost, and a thin layer of mulch. It's just been sitting there through the winter. It's about 20' by 12'. (I did have some roses ready to put in the ground last fall and I planted Livin Easy, Easy Does It and 1 Peace Rose there. My Livin Easy's are absolutely terrific, My Easy Does It are just now beginning to thrive, and I've already moved my Peace Rose to a container onto my deck; it shrunk considerably, and I think it's due to deer munching). This year - now - there are a few clusters of mushrooms coming up around on the area. Usually to me mushrooms means "too dense and too moist" - and/or because of spores in the mulch. I don't know for sure and I really don't know what I should do next. My plan has been to amend the holes as I plant rather than amend the entire area en mass. What do you suggest? What do I need to know? What should I do? Thanks!

| I wouldn't worry about the mushrooms. Was the "topsoil" bagged organic matter? I would rake the mulch back and dig in the organic matter. Uniform preparation is better than holes. Most of the roots are going to be in the upper 10". |
