| I am looking for a rose that has large blooms. I don't care about the color too much, not fond of electric orange color.
I have Medallion and it had large blooms when I bought it. I would also like it to have at least moderate disease resistance, I am willing to spray if I need to. Fragrance doesn't matter but would be an added bonus. Thanks all! Tammy |
Follow-Up Postings:

| Valencia and Elina are two very good hybrid teas with large flowers. They do have moderate blackspot resistance compared to other HTs, but will benefit from spraying in NC. Valencia is totally gorgeous and has pretty good fragrance. |
| Parole is a fragrant HT with blooms even larger than Elina. |
| Peter Mayle--big, fat blooms! And stunning hot pink color! Total show-off for size and color. He has fairly good disease-resistance in my area (Kansas Zone 6), with a little assistance -- a couple sprays in the spring and in the fall. Don't remember if he has fragrance or not. Too many allergies around here for me to smell much of anything. Kate |
| Zach beat me to it: the Kordes HT Parole. Extremely fragrant too! |
| Just checked on Peter Mayle--very fragrant! Evidently not quite as large as Parole, but I find Peter's bloom is more shapely--but that may be because it grows in my garden, and Parole doesn't. Helpmefind says Peter is very disease resistant, which may be a slight exaggeration, but it is usually quite good on that score. Both Peter and Parole are big hot pinks! Would have to see both in real life to make any meaningful distinction in color, but from the pics, evidently Parole does sometimes come out a paler pink (or maybe fades to paler pink sometimes?). Peter's color stays quite consistent--no fading that I remember, not paler pink for any reason. Romantica (Peter) vs Kordes (Parole)--French or German. Kate |

| Ingrid Bergman. Deep red, no fragrance. The biggest AND longest lasting blooms in my garden. Blooms last 3+ weeks on the bush - crazy. |
| peter mayle for sure...very very fragrant, long lasting and huge!! Kristi |
| I can't say much about the size of Ingrid Bergman. While I love the bush and flower, that thing shrinks in summer heat like "Honey I Shrunk the Kids!" If you're in Zone 7, you need to consider the warnings about roses that may shrink under heat. Peace is always huge for me - Spring, Summer or Fall. Brandy is another that puts out saucer-size blooms, no matter the time of year. Garden Party and Color Magic can put out some huge blooms when it's cool, but maybe not so much during heat. Medallion is OK, but for me, the petals lack substance. It's almost like having a rose made out of toilet-paper: while consistently large, the slightest thing can tear or blemish the bloom. This is out of left-field, especially because it's one of the worst bushes I have, but Dublin has the most consistent, super-large blooms (and with terrific substance!) of any rose that I have. It's super-productive, too, on one of the most spindly, rickety and thorny bushes I've ever seen - quite a contradiction in rose vs. bush. (It's hot pink - maybe there's something about that color and size. ;-) ) |

| 'First Prize' has very large blooms, right up there with 'Medallion'. |
| Another enthusiastic vote for "Parole" and yet another for "Valencia". Both beautifully fragrant and huge blooms. They cut extremely well, too. I don't spray, so these two may get a touch of blackspot at the end of the season, but nothing heartbreaking. |
| Brandy had large blooms when in full bloom. I just measured one at 7". Is that large enough? Clare |
| Can those of you growing Peter Mayle tell me how large the bush gets?....Maryl |
| I remember 'Peace' having large blooms when I grew it some years ago. No fragrance to speak of, but I really liked the color(s). |

| Elina and Parole are huge. Jema is pretty and open blooms big. Denali has big blooms. I sp'd it because it nodded. |
| Belinda's Dream has huge pink blooms that are fragrant on a bushy and shapely plant. Yves Piaget also has very large blooms and is fragrant. |

| Our Yves has giant blooms, so does Mr Lincoln and Peace. |
| To answer maryl's question, Peter Mayle is a taller HT in my garden, maybe 4-5 ft tall (as compared to my Double Delight or Elle which get maybe 3.5 ft tall). Can't imagine how tall Peter Mayle would get in California! HTs in my region are almost always shorter than the catalogs indicate. The other thing about Peter Mayle is that it is a more vertical rose--kinda narrow and upright. Valencia has a large beautiful bloom also--bloom seems to last nearly forever sometimes. Kate |

| Thanks Kate for the information on Peter Mayle....Maryl |
