Well, despite trying to shade a bunch of the roses during last week's insanely hot temps, I've got sunburn on a bunch of them. Grrrrrr. So what do I do? The ones that are brown and fell off are obvious enough; the ones that are green with burns on them look like heck, but I am not sure whether I should leave them so that the plant can keep getting nourishment now that the weather has calmed down a bit, or whether I should take them off. Sigh.

The hellacious heat is FAR from over. All the plants are going to need all the foliage possible to prevent sun scald to the canes, which is what can lead to your roses actually dying in these parts. Where there is rain, leaves about to fall actually do, but not here where there isn't any. If the brown, dried foliage is bothering you, go out and blow the plants out with a strong hose stream. I do it here and in the Santa Clarita Valley all the time, particularly with climbers against walls. If you can do it when the sun isn't shining directly on the plants, they'll be happier. Water droplets act like perfect magnifying glasses and will burn dead spots in to otherwise healthy foliage. I don't worry about encouraging diseases by wetting the foliage in this climate. When it's as hot as it's been, as windy as we've endured and as arid as we can expect it to be, no self respecting fungus spore is going to germinate. If the leaf has green area to it, leave it alone. All green parts are continuing to feed the plants and all leaves, including the dead brown ones are shading the canes. Shading the wood and promoting new foliage to feed the plants and shade growth are the two most important things to consider here, now. Kim

I'm with Jim and Mirenda. Every time I watch the news or weather and see how you guys are baking I wish I could send you some cold rain in trade for some warm sunshine. This year it seems like nobody's happy.

Thanks, M! The rain and some of the wonderful looking roses you have, we can't get, would be wonderful! I'll happily send you all the heat and sun possible. Today, it's gray and overcast with a chilly breeze. LOVELY! Kim
