A Remedy for Thrips

Two weeks ago, I pruned out several dozen buds that never quite opened after I slacked off of the Conserve and Avid for a couple of weeks. The thrips had chewed them to bits.

Then I sprayed Naturalis L last weekend for the first time. Light-colored blooms looked amazingly clean during the week after - Peace, Gold Medal, Double Delight. I can hardly believe it, too - for the first time outside of a chilly late-October, I may have a spotless Elina bloom.

I sprayed it again this morning. Temps will be in the low 90's this afternoon and reached mid-80's yesterday. Yet, my Garden Party has about 6, very clean - very white - blooms on it (2nd flush). Pristine and Tiffany are on the verge of a 2nd flush, too, with a bunch more Elina's on the way. If this holds up, they'll all be clean, too.

They may really have discovered a weapon for thrips:
Naturalis L.

Thank you rosetom. I assume that this product is not compatabile with the use of fungicides for blackspot. Any comments?

Wow! That's great news! Thanks for sharing it. Any pictures of all those pretties?

No pics yet this season, I've been trying to get all my roses back into exhibition form and haven't had time.

Henry, you are correct - not only can it not be mixed with a fungicide, but it cannot be used within 3 days of any fungicide spraying. You need to take great care to have everything rinsed thoroughly, too. To be honest, I'm pushing my regular fungicide spraying to 3-4 weeks right now, to give this stuff a chance to work. I'll spray it again next week and then start back on the fungicide the week after that.

Hi tom,

I'm desperate enough to try it. How long do you think a bottle of it will last? I have about 100 roses, half of which are being ruined by thrips. Also, where can I get Indicate?

I've been spraying every two weeks. I missed one week when it was raining and I had a little bs outbreak. But I think now that the hotter weather is here to stay, I'll be able to go three weeks between fungicide sprayings So I should wait at least 3 days from spraying the Bayer to spraying this stuff?

RE: A Remedy for Thrips

Good luck! It's expensive, but a lot less than a decent bottle of Floramite if you were having a mite outbreak. I mean - really, thrips made me give up this hobby about 5 years ago. I've returned to it in the last couple of years, but the thrips were about to make me give it up again. If I can't cut roses and bring them in the home/office in a nice vase (or maybe photograph them), then there's no point in doing this.

I tried hard this season - our mild winter really gave them a head start, especially after I let them languish for several years. The first flush was pretty good and I was all over them with Conserve overall and Avid on the buds. But I just couldn't keep it up every single week. Then as I noted in the first post, things got so bad that the remaining blooms from the spring flush didn't even open. Of course, Elina easily had 2 dozen blooms - most of them 5 inches across on at least 3 foot stems. Yet, all of them got thrown in the trash. Crystalline wasn't much better - just a dozen blooms in all, but all ruined. Pristine, Secret, Lagerfeld, most of Iceberg, etc., etc. - all ruined.

Anyway, I had seen Naturalis L prominently displayed on Rosemania this year and decided to call Robbie Tucker and ask him the latest on thrips control. He suggested giving this a try and letting him know how it worked. Posting this thread is my first step.

I'M IMPRESSED.

Great, I will let you know my results. I'm past the first flush, starting with the second and the thrips are out of control. It's been getting worse every year.
