need help pick up a rose

Hi, I have never grown roses before, but I have room and love to grow a rose next the front entrance.

Would anyone in this forum recommend a waft fragant (the strong, the better) climbing rose ( over the door ) that flowers all season long in zone 5?

Will you be spraying to prevent the typical diseases? (Blackspot, primarily)

Probably no climber/rose will be cane hardy to the tips in your zone but if you want good fragrance look into either one of the old garden roses that can get quite tall (I like my Reine des Violettes for both it's height and fragrance) or a David Austin rose. A number of the DA roses can get very tall and are wonderfully fragrant. My Golden Celebration is 12 feet high and the fragrance drifts down from above.

Seil is correct in the difficulty of locating climbers for our zone. You will have to prioritize what is most important - scent, rebloom, disease resistance. I've got five climbers and none have all three (one is new this summer, so I can only talk about the other four).

Thank you all. It kinda explaines why I did not see too many climbing rose grow in the area. I might have to get something else instead.

I think you might find some useful info from Peter Schneider's book "Right Rose, Right Place"
ISBN-13: 978-1603424387

As a rose newbie, I like this book very much.

Just hope there is a similar rose book for hot/dry climate...Some of my roses are really unhappy under the sun now.

Here is a link that might be useful: Right rose, Right place at Amazon
