Help! SCALE on Tradescant!

My husband noticed yesterday that Tradescant didn't look too good. I looked, and 1st thought it was a disease, but now I think it's Rose Scales. I love my Tradescant. My family gave it to me as a Mother's Day gift the year before last. I really want to save it. Somewhere I read to use Q-tips and rubbing alcohol to get rid of rose scales, but someone else said that is a waste of time. What REALLY works to get rid of scales?
Thank you,
Kitty

You don't list where you are. It is helpful to have a general idea. Here's an article on scale and how best to control different types.

Hi hoovb, I'm in Minnesota.

Thank you for the link. I'm still not positive what type they are. I'm hoping the soft body type as there are ants around, but my yard is very sandy and there are ants everywhere. I didn't see ants on the rose though. I think I should spray or do something because there are hardly any leaves and the rose seems to really be suffering. I tried to take a pic., but couldn't get a decent one.

According to rose-roses.com they can be rubbed off with a rag or squirted off with blasts of water from a hose.

The reason I ask for general location is because the US is a big country so there are different types of scale depending on region. You might see if there is a MN state website or other state-specific site that can help you id.

I get small infestations of scale every once in a while on a rose. I cut off the infested cane and put it into the trash. Of course this works here because roses get huge, plenty of other canes. Where cold winters keep roses small, it's not such a good solution.

RE: Help! SCALE on Tradescant!

In Houston, I had scale on a cycad, fortunately it was a small cycad, and I did the q-tips with alcohol on it and wiped out the problem.

Without knowing the kind of scale, I can suggest that all animals can be suffocated. Even cooking oil would work sprayed on so that it would cover the plant. BUT I'd do it when you are forecast to have two days of cloudy weather, and then wash it off with a detergent (Like Dawn which cuts grease especially well) before sun can hit the leafy parts and less than year old canes.

In my part of the country, decades ago a nursery sold plants heavily infected with scale. It was so bad the state came in and sprayed their growing fields because the owners wouldn't. Years later, hearing that story, I realized that the euronymus (probably not spelled correctly) that my grandparents had shouldn't have had those speckled stems that I thought looked so strange.

Thank you, all, for the suggestions.

I found a MN website, but am still unsure what kind they are. The website recommended a number of things to spray, but said to do it when they hatch. I am pretty sure I'll have no clue when they hatch. I scrubbed with a rag a bit and understand now why they recommend q-tips. Thorns can be quite painful. I didn't have any rubbing alcohol, so I sprayed with insecticidal soap (one of the sprays the website recommended). It is suppose to rain for a couple days. When it stops, I will try the rubbing alcohol and possibly oil. Hopefully, one of these methods will save my rose.
Thanks,
Kitty
