Pickering has a search page but they are not accepting orders now.

Palatine is another good Canadian nursery, but I don't know if they are accepting rose orders this late in the season.

I usually order roses in the fall and early winter--for spring delivery and planting.

If you order roses through a place like Roses Unlimited (North Carolina), they sell potted roses (most of the other places sell bare-root roses). Probably you can order the potted roses much later in the season than you can the bare-root roses -- because potted roses can be planted almost any time.

disease-resistant roses

As a couple posters have already pointed out to you, Double Delight is not a very disease-resistant rose. I don't think I would completely trust that list you are working with--though Elina is fairly good on disease-resistance, but gets some BS on occasion.

Why don't you use the search box on this page. Type in disease-resistant roses. You should get links to lots of different links on this forum.

You can buy potted roses at Palatine. I don't remember how far Niagara is from Toronto, but we have unquestionably traveled farther to get roses. A plan may be to call them, and ask for recommendations for roses they currently have in stock. Then make the trip to pick them up.

I believe there are local garden centers that purchase roses from Pickering, then sell them potted for the rest of the summer, but there doesn't seem to be a list available.

Seems to me, the local nursery in Toronto, Sheridan, has a nice online list one can find with google.

My next step would be to look for the colors and forms you are interested in.

After that I would check HelpMeFind for reviews of those roses in YOUR zone and see what they think, reduce your list accordingly.

Then I would contact the local Rose Society, already posted that link in a different thread of yours and ask a local rosarian what they consider good in your method of gardening and location.

Pink Promise is a fantastic Hybrid Tea in a cold zone. Look for it on Sheridan's site. It's really vigorous and an abundant bloomer. It grows to 4 feet tall here.

Blackspot is typical here, and the roses get blackspot in my no spray garden, however, they grow well and bloom well.

I've found that organic fertilizers build the soil to create an environment where roses are strong garden plants, even with blackspot present in the garden.

HRose - maybe a local Rose Society can help you find a good place to buy roses - now that the bare root season is over from the bigger Canadian vendors? You may want to spend the summer studying good roses in gardens around your area - to see what does well and what you like.

Dare I recommend a few roses - I really shouldn't but -one to look could be Chandos Beauty/Sweet love. John Moody - writes about Chandos Beauty on HMF:

It a classified as hybrid tea. Mine are growing like a gangbusters on steorids

Hybrid Tea expert John Moody wrote on HelpMeFind Roses.

Whatever appropriate name you choose to call this rose in your garden-Chandos Beauty, Harmisty, Sweet Love, it is a gorgeous rose. This is what growing roses is all about in my opinion. The bush in my garden is strong and vigorous and disease resistant. The flowers are numerous and large and so beautiful that nothing compares to them of all the 450 roses I grow. The outer petals are a creamy white and the inner petals are a translucent peachy pink color that lasts for the life of the bloom. The fragrance is strong and can be found at any time of day and in any temperature Mother Nature decides to throw out at us. Also, rain, wind, cold, heat, etc...seem to have little to no affect on the bloom production on my plant which was only in its' second year in 2010. I can't wait to see how it grows in 2011 when it has a bit more maturity on the plant. If you want a real rose for your garden, this is the one to get for it.

Another modern rose - that is really growing on me - is Kordes - RosenFee - See link below

2 modern patio Climbers from Danish Poulsen Roses - are also exceptionally disease resistant - Mama Mia :
Climber. Courtyard Collection. Light pink, darker undertones. Strong fragrance. Very full (41+ petals) bloom form. L. Pernille Olesen (2011) Nothing short but amazing! And Piruette - http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=21.171807

But local for local knowledge and take some years to study what roses are most disease resistant -in YOUR area.

Most of Sheridan's roses are imported from the US and on Huey rootstock. Most, but not all.

Both Pickering and Palatine sell potted roses at their nurseries in the summer. Pickering is in Port Hope which is about 45 min to an hour east of Toronto on a good traffic day and Paltine is about 1.5-2 hours west of Toronto.

Of the roses that you list, only Elina has above average disease resistance here. Savoy Hotel isn't bad, but not really a disease resistant rose. The rest of them are basically a blackspot party waiting to happen with some mildew and maybe even rust thrown in for good measure.

To the_morden_man, what roses do you recommend for a spray restricted area like Ontario?

 o
RE: where to but disease resistant roses in Toronto?

buy Sulphur dust from home depot mix with water and spray

 o
RE: where to but disease resistant roses in Toronto?

these sprays don't kill the black spot they just control it by not letting it get to the other leaves thats why it's important to spray early spring before you see black spot and keep on spraying until late fall Ontario has a lot of wet humid weather with cool nights and warm days

Henry,

If HT's are someone's thing, then many of the newer Kordes Hybrid Teas and Grandiflora's have very good, to exceptionally high standards of disease resistance to BS, mildew and rust. The latter not being a common disease issue in Ontario, but can be in cramped beds with poor air circulation and or proximity to fences and walls.

Some very good examples would include, Grand Amore, Beverly, La Perla and Eliza in particular. Eliza has been in my garden for 4 years now and has never suffered even a hint of BS or mildew. You should not really need to treat any of these.

Moreover, the Kordes bred Fairytale series does exceptionally well here and in PEI, Canada. Many of the Fairy Tale roses are also cross-classified as floribunda's and HT's and not as shrub roses. For example, Golden Fairy Tale is often listed as an HT rose because of its upright growth habit. It is very hardy for a yellow rose, blooms exceptionally well and is near bullet-proof in disease resistance terms, much like most of the Fairy Tale series in general. Their only real weakness is a general lack of stong fragrance.

I also can't say enough about the Vigorosa series of roses. Once established, they are essentially season long blooming machines that are hardy and disease free here.

Another good rose that is classified as a groundcover/landscape rose, but that grows very much as a shrub is the rose Escimo. It is a stunning single white.

For miniatures, Kordes has a wondeful rose called 'Roxy' that is like an improved and more disease resistant version of Sweet Chariot, but not as strong in fragrance.

Lots of the Austins do well here, but an equal number do not. Explorers and Rugosa's are bullet-proof by and large and the Parklands bloom very well and hold up to the heat, but some of them can be more prone to BS than I would care for. Morden Sunrise being a very good example and sometimes Morden Blush as well.

If we're talking purely in terms of disease resistance and roses that are hardy and bloom well, I have a very strong leaning these days to the newer Kordes roses and in particular, those with an ADR certification.

A quick update. For all those in Toronto and I assume most of southern Ontario, it appears that Palatine is now providing roses to both the Metro supermarkets and Canadian Tire.

I was incredibly shocked and happy to see their tags on some beautiful and healthy roses in their respective garden centers.

The local Metro had most of the Fairy Tale series roses on display and several of the Kordes climbers such as Rosanna and Laguna. Zaide was another variety they had which I was surprised to see.

Metro was selling them for #13.99 for a 2 gallon plant. Great choice if you want hardy and near bullet-proof roses for our area.

RE: where to but disease resistant roses in Toronto?

You might want to reconsider Pristine--I lost one to cane dieback--I chalked it up to not being winter hardy.

The newer Kordes' roses are exceptionally disease free, but largely scentless. Meilland also has some that are wonderfully clean like The Paul McCartney Rose (Moby HT in my yard) that are exceptionally fragrant as well.

 o
RE: where to but disease resistant roses in Toronto?

Steve,

Largely scentless is perhaps too broad a statement. Several of the Kordes roses are very fragrant ranging to mildly fragrant. Rather few are scentless altogether.

For instance, Golden Fairy Tale and Beverly are very fragrant roses. Others like Eliza and say, Cinderella Fairy Tale are less so, but fragrance is certainly discernible. It really depends on the variety and there is a wide spectrum. All however, are very good to exceptional in terms of both disease resistance and hardiness in our zone.

If one were to compare fragrance to say the Explorer or Parkland series roses, I think the Fairy Tale series stacks up rather well and they kick in some of the better attributes of those roses as well, without some of their faults.
