| While Chrysler Imperial is a beautiful red, it tends more towards the purplish red as it ages, so I'm not sure I'd call it fire engine red. Why not go with Fire Fighter? To me that fulfills all the requirements and I know it is a very popular rose on this forum. Kate |

| Crimson Glory, Chrysler Imperial, Papa Meilland, and Mister Lincoln are the red roses that have won the ARS James Alexander Gamble Fragrance Awards, which were started in 1962 (CG was the first). The JAG requirements state, "the rose considered the most fragrant in municipal and private gardens throughout the United States over a five-year period. The rose must be registered and must be rated at least 7.5." This means that not only is the rose fragrant, it has to be an outstanding rose with vigor and exhibition form. IMHO, back in 1962, 1965, and even 1974 (CG, CI, and PM, respectively), standards for really vigorous roses with exhibition form were not as "evolved" as they are today. ML won very recently in 2003, which is a singular feat since the rose was introduced in 1964. |
