What roses are tolerant of black walnut toxicity? I would like to plant roses but I have a number of black walnuts on the property. Thanks

IMHO, none. However, that said, I am surrounded with black walnut trees and I grow about 100 roses. None of mine have done well within 20 feet of a tree. If you place them as far away as possible, your chances of success are better. Second, multiflora rose (a wild bramble) is tolerant of black walnut toxin. If you buy roses on multiflora root stock, your chances are good to very good of success. Third, rugosa roses, at least the ones I have, have not blinked an eye at the black walnut behind them.

This was taken last spring. That is Golden Wings growing on multiflora root stock and 3 rugosas next to her. There are two more on her other side unseen.

Ann, grows American Pillar, Paul's H. Musk and Buff Beauty right under a black walnut. So, go ahead and try. I just may have bad luck, who knows?

Bumping this because I am curious as to whether own-root or multiflora root stock rugosas make a difference. I plan on planting some rugosas within the drip zone of a rugosa (plenty of sun there). I've done a fair amount of research and I can't seem to get an answer.

Moreover, that picture is beautiful, and gives me hope.
