Do I have enough sun to grow roses?

I have a bed that doesn't get sun until around 1:00. Would I have any luck with roses?

Thanks!

How long does the sunlight remain there? An hour? Three? Five?

Also, what is providing the shade--a wall, a tree, or a building? As you are zone 7, I think that is Lady Banks territory--there are probably roses that could grow to the top and over whatever is providing the shade.

A lot of the Hybrid Musks are shade tolerant--not full shade, but as few as four hours.

I've been working in the yard today and keeping an eye on the bed in question. It is starting to get shade now; so only about 3 hours sun. The trees, I think, are casting the shade as the bed is in a pretty open space in the front yard. I'm really surprised it doesn't get more sun than it does.

Rogue Valley's website has a function where you can search for "shade tolerant" and then "very shade tolerant". I would try one or two of the very shade tolerant varieties, but even for them only 3 hours might be pushing it. I have a friend who grow the Hybrid Musk Bubblebath in an area that probably gets that little sun, but it does grow slowly and the repeat bloom is'nt as good as mine either.

I think K.S. Greenman has it right.
There are roses you can grow in those conditions -- but they won't bloom anything like they would in better sun.

Oops, sorry about that. I think I tried to reload the page after I had already posted it.

what direction is the sun from? I have found that east sun, IMHO, is better than west sun, for those areas that don't get full sun. and DO have some really successful roses that are under trees, but get a texas sized blast of morning sun, til noon at best, more like 11am, so 5 hours of sun (at best, some dappled) and do beautifully.

I am no expert, but ICEBERG really get so little sun, 2 hours at best ( and only a month or so either side of june 21, as on north east side) and PLAYBOY, not much better. The rest of the day is bright light, but honestly, no sun. (((please don't blast me folks, but really, bright light is doing it for these guys)))

no, I am not advocating planting roses in the shade, but some really can put up with bright light and a few hours of direct sun...IMHO.

yes, they are more leggy than others...

judi, so sorry, reread your post, and I figure this must be west sun. however, one pm forward, IMHO, I think you'd be ok, not best bloom production, better with hybrid musk and other shade tolerant varieties. I have some in similar hours of sun, on west side of home, and I don't get the best bloom production, but they are healthy. I think you CAN grow roses there.

Thanks, guys, for the responses. I think I'm going to search for those that tolerate shade and give it a try. I've been bitten by the rose bug!
