First flush beginning with small blooms

We had a cold winter with cold spring. I'd say last week was the first week of nice warm 70s weather. Everything has been delayed. I normally have a full flush going by now and the roses are just starting to bloom. Strangely most plants in the ground are blooming around the bases first. Most bothersome though is the small bloom size. Blooms are about half the size as normal. I've done nothing else differently this year, so I have to say its weather related. This is my Benjamin Britten potted rose. You can see the blooms are about half the size they should be. All roses were topdressed with manure, given bone and blood meal when pruned. Then I gave them a fertilizer two weeks later, and two weeks after that Mills Magic. They are all nicely green and their leaves look nice and healthy, its just the blooms are small! How disappointing to wait and wait for your first flush and get poor blooms!

Same here. After the late cold snaps and then the deluge of rain, wind and hail, many of my first blooms have been either small, deformed, balled, rotted or have been exceptionally light in coloring verses their normal color. Forecast is for rain every day for the next week after a week of temps in the 90's with no rain, so I'm guessing my next blooms will suffer from the back and forth weather, as well. It is disappointing, but I'm happy to at least see life in my garden again after this long, hard winter.

I'VE HAD THIS PROBLEMS ON ABOUT HALF OR MORE OF MY ROSES. Sorry didn't know I hit caps. anywho, some were good , some didn't bloom as well and then some were small. I chalked it up to all the weird weather too. I was glad to atleast still have most of my roses, lost 10 or so total I think, maybe more to the weird winter.. maybe next year :)

I think that's to be expected after the terrible winter and spring we've all had. I'm going to be thrilled with any blooms I can get!

Well at least I'm not alone, and I am lucky to not have completely lost any roses this winter like so many here. It was in the eighties all week this week so perhaps this bad spring is all behind us!

It sounds the your roses are healthy, just the small blooms. I hope that somehow that will bring on a beautiful later in the season flush. By that time my roses won't be looking so great, especially if we don't get some decent rain here.
