Found Fungus Under Wood Mulch

I am a first time rose gardener and thought I had the perfect place to plant my new rose bush. It is on a sunny side of my house in an existing bed with other evergreens and shrubs. It is mulched with pine bark. As I was pulling back the mulch to dig the hole, I found what looks to be a light yellow fungus growing in some of the mulch that is closest to the soil. I was wondering if anyone knew if this might hurt the rose bush. Thank you for your time.

Probably not. Most fungus is good. The bad fungus will not be visible until it is already attacking your rose in the form of blackspot or powdery mildew.

Thank you for your help. Another strange questionI was thinking of placing a few more roses in 2 of my adjacent beds. Over the years, our lawn maintenance service has added a fresh layer of mulch to each bed to spruce it up. I noticed this year that they are becoming very dense with mulch and if I were to plant anything in one of these beds I would have to dig down 8-10 inches to get to the ground. Some of the mulch has decayed and formed a nice layer of compost however I am reluctant to plant any thing new here. Do you think it would be possible to plant a rose here?

In woods and grasslands, everything lives under a mulch where the top layer is undecayed and the bottom layer is fully decayed (2+ years old) and releasing nutrients. This is a good model for the gardener. However, it sounds like your yard man is overdoing. Typically it is recommended to maintain a mulch 2" to 3" deep. I guess, though, the situation is something like sheet composting or "lasagna gardening" where people pull back a deep layer of compost and plant at the soil surface or a couple of inches above that. So if I had that situation, I would plant roses there and see what happens.

Tell your yard man not to bring mulch unless you order it. It takes 3-4 years for wood chips to break down.
