I recently planted a John Davis and it is the first climber I have owned. My questions regard pruning, being a climber, I would think I wouldn't prune like a bush rose? Do I just deadhead the spent blooms? Do I cut back to a leaf node? Thanks for any advice!!

John Davis isn't the most vigorous rose in the world, and seems to want to grow like a shrub for at least the first few years. Given that, I'd do as little pruning as possible until it gained some size. Deadheading spent blooms would be the way to go.

Thanks mad gallica, That's exactly the info I needed. I have several William Baffin and I was hoping this one would have some of that same vigor, without the unruliness.
