New Roses - Stunted/Dying?

So I planted a great many rose bushes in a dirt path around my lawn; 18 bushes to be exact. Most of them are beginning to thrive, but I a couple of the bushes are making me concerned.

A couple of days after I planted them, there was some extremely hot weather, and I do not believe I watered the bushes adequately the day before/after the hottest day. Four of the new bushes were beginning to wilt, so I watered like crazy and pruned back some of the wilted growth hoping that this would reinvigorate the bushes. This seemed to work fine for a couple of the bushes, but the other two have shown no new growth of any form in the week or so after this occurred.

Is it normal for a new bush to display little to no new growth (no new canes so far) after undergoing a trauma, or are these troubled bushes on their way out? Is there anything I can do, besides regular watering every other day, to encourage them to recover and thrive?

Thanks!

If it helps, the troubled roses are:

Ketchup & Mustard
Heirloom

I think you've diagnosed the situation very well. Still, you should continue your attention and regular watering for a few weeks. (A couple of gallons every other day is exactly right for a new planting.) I've seen things sprout from the bud union (or roots of an own-root) a few weeks later when everything appeared dead.

At some point when summer really comes around, you'll know for sure whether they're dead or not.

Don't take it too hard if it turns out they're dead. It takes years of experience not to lose a rose or two with new multiple plantings. Even then, an experienced roser can still be pretty good at killing them. ;-)

Running short of water causes the roses to stop growing and harden off the growth points. After about two weeks with water, they will start new growth buds at the leaf axils. If your roses have un-wilted, they will be fine.
