Yellow to Red?

At some unknown time during the last 15 years, my mother planted a rose bush (variety unknown) which for several years yielded pretty yellow roses...until now. The roses blooming now are all red and there is nary a yellow rose to be found. I know nothing about roses and neither does she. Is this something unusual or not? Thanks for any assistance.

I would guess you are observing the Dr. Huey take-over. Many hybrid teas are grown on the rootstock Dr. Huey. If the top part of the rose freezes (as it well might do in Ohio!), all that is left is the different rootstock which starts producing its own flowers.

If you want to check, Dr. Huey puts out dark red blooms and blooms only once a year (in the spring). And right after it blooms, it will get a terrible case of blackspot. It actually can be a rather attractive rose in its own way, but is accompanied by too many down features, so most people give it the spade and start with a new, more cold-hearty rose.

It has happened to many of us, so you aren't alone. : (

And as for your question, no, it's not unusual at all. The good Dr. is a very vigorous grower which is why he has been used for a long time as root stock but he can sometimes be a real thug and take over the grafted rose.

I'm sorry to hear your mother lost her lovely yellow rose but if it were me I'd dig it out (and you have to dig ALL the roots out or he'll come back) and find her a nice Julia Child rose to plant instead.

Dr Huey can take over a bush without a freeze. He sends out vigorous fast growing canes unnoticed and saps the nutrients from the grafted top.
The unknowing grower thinks their rose bush is doing great until they don't get any blooms or buds.
He's kind of sneaky that way.
