What ever happened to....

I love things from the 50's and 60's, including old rose catalogs and ads. Was flipping through a few today and was reading about some that I don't think I ever heard of....

Lemon Chiffon was good enough for a full page ad:

Twilight's picture (and price) caught my eye:

It looks like the owner of the catalog put an order in for Pink Frost:

I guess Grenoble wasn't good enough for a picture:

This ad for Spartan caught my eye. It is actually still being sold by Vintage (according to HMF). I had to mention this because a 55 year old ad has sold me on this rose:

Anyways I hope this interests others, I love old ads!

How delightful! Seems a shame these have all disappeared now. There isn't even a picture of Pink Frost on HMF so if you can please post that one from the catalog.

I love the prices!! Thanks for posting it would be really neat to hear from someone who has one of these old beauties!

I fear that with all the rose nurseries that have closed in recent years, we will lose track of a lot more wonderful roses. The only consolation is that new ones continue to be bred and some of them are great, too. Love your post!

Doesn't look like Spartan is available at Vintage anymore. Please anyone, let me know if its for sale anywhere else!

Thanks so much, North Texas Dude, for giving us rose lovers such an enjoyable "blast from the past". I grew up during the 50's and 60's, and it's wonderful to see these old ads from a classic time gone by.

Take care. :)

Unless there was something wrong with it, that Twilight would be a top seller today.

RE: What ever happened to....

Twilight was a VERY weak plant and not very healthy, as should have been expected. It was three-quarters Grey Pearl, one of the hardest roses to grow, period, much less grow well. As long as it was novel enough to keep selling before the Proof of the Pudding ratings killed it, J&P produced it. You'll find many complaints about lack of vigor, susceptibility to disease, lack of cold hardiness and hatred for the color and form in the old ARS annuals. Kim
