sorry no picture. The rose is Chrysler Imperial. I have pruned this rose many times before with good results. After pruning this time it came back with shoots off the main branches that are covered with thorns and the leaves from shoots look withered. I've seen a picture of it on here sometime or another but can't recall what this is.If I dig it up and replace it will I have to replace soil also. Please help. Pembroke

Could be Rose Rosette Disease, but hard to say without pictures--cuz if you or a neighbor recently sprayed Round-up in the general vicinity, the occasional damage to a rose can look a lot like RRD.

If it is RRD, just dig up the rose thoroughly--get all the root sections. I have planted in the same spot with no ill effects, but I won't guarantee anything on that score.

If it is herbicide damage, water thoroughly and wait for it to recover.

Pics really would help with a diagnosis.

Kate: I found the picture of Rose Rosette disease or virus and what I have looks exactly like pictures. Have dug it up and will replant one that is some what resistant to this disease. Thanks for your help. Pembroke

RE: what is this?

Pembroke--I don't think there are any roses that are resistant to RRD. It flies in carried by a tiny mite blown in the wind--unbelievable distances sometimes. If the mite lands on your rose by chance, the rose gets infected with the virus.

That means you could probably plant Chrysler Imperial there again and probably be perfectly safe--kinda like lightning doesn't strike twice in the same place. It's all a matter of chance--but the chances are it won't happen twice exactly the same.

So disappointing when a rose manifest RRD symptoms, isn't it!
