What'sYour Opinion???

We have a knockout rose at the church that is covered w/powdery mildew....Of course it is no longer in the dormant stage, however, it will continue to suffer if left in this location....

with close attention on watering, and this is a 'shrub' rose (tough), why couldn't a person move it to a happier location NOW. I personally have moved roses after dormancy, and they survived....

what's your take...just curious. thanks!

IF done properly, you can transplant most roses virtually any time of year. Again, IF done properly. Kim

I've transplanted as late as July and not lost a rose. You have to make sure you have your new hole all prepped before you dig it up. Then get as big a root ball as possible and keep it as intact as possible in the move. Once in the new spot keep it well watered, but don't drown it, until you see new growth start. Then you can give it some fertilizer and go back to a regular water schedule.

The other thing is if there is a huge amount of top growth you may want to cut it back some because no matter how careful you are you'll lose some roots. If there is too much top growth for the roots to supply it could cause a problem. In any case you may see some wilt/shock immediately after moving it but that should go away after a few days if everything else is OK.

I've also moved roses during the hot summer and succeeded--not that I'd recommend doing that! At any rate, in addition to the good advice above, I'd also recommend that the rose-to-be-moved be well-watered the day before--makes the digging easier and easier to keep the rootball all together for the move.

If the rootball is quite large, have a tarp of some kind already spread out and place (roll?) the rose onto it. It's sometimes easer to drag the tarp to the new spot rather than trying to carry the rose.

Wilt-Pruf on the leaves is another "trick".
