RE: ants

I would not worry about the ants. We have them all over our garden, and sometimes when I water a particular area there is an "ant eruption" as they flee the water. I think they help aerate the soil. I don't think they hurt plants (although I have heard some people say that they sometimes carry aphids up the plants and come back to get the "nectar" (ants farming domestic animals!?).

It's obvious none of you have fire ants. :( They'll kill a tree if you don't do something about them - by making a mound so big it tears up the roots. At the very least, they ruin the landscape and serve as "gardner land mines" that can be very dangerous if you step into them.

I'm not kidding ...

Thankfully, I haven't had to deal with fire ants since I was a kid in the south. Ants can loosen the soil around the plant roots, disturbing its ability to take up water and anchor itself in the soil. Repeatedly flooding the pot with water can help to force them to find other lodgings. MOST ants can be killed with direct contact with ammonia. Cheap cinnamon sticks stuck in the pot can also help to encourage them to move on. They don't like cinnamon. Kim

I've had good results with cinnamon. And you don't have to worry about poisoning your kids or dogs.

Tom -- No. We don't have fire ants in my area. They've been seen down in Orange County, but in potted plants brought in from TX. Here in SoCal, though, there are huge colonies of Agentinian Ants, which are ranked among the world's top 100 invasive species.

I DETEST ants!
