HELP! Eden climbers doing poorly

rscacheri

I have had these for 6 years and every May they bloom spectacularly, until now. I have 4 plants wound around two eight foot tuteurs. They are watered regularly and fertilized 1-2x/yr. I prune the vertical branches back in March. This year many of the big (2-3 cm diameter)canes are dead. There is a small amount of new growth on the smaller canes, and minimal new flowers. My care for the roses has not changed. It was a mild winter, and last year's black spot was average. Are my roses just getting old? Should they be cut back all the way to 8 inches next spring? Thanks for any help. Other than a lack of scent, these are my favorite roses in my garden.
