Leaves folding on roses - Please Help??:

Posted by cadence 8b (My Page) on

My climbing rose (Polka)has some kind of bug but I have no idea what it could be. I noticed a few leaves were folded in half, and when I opened the leaf it was sticky inside. I opened a few more of the leaves and found a tiny little crawly worm less than a quarter of an inch long. Anyone know what this might be? and how I should treat it? I removed the few leaves that I noticed before it spreads, but I want to get rid of whatever it is. I really would appreciate any help I can get on this.

Some caterpillar types have chosen your rose for their new homes--so they can reproduce. You did exactly right--remove the chosen leaves. Unless you are facing an unusual infestation, that is probably all that is going to happen to your roses. I usually have a couple of those per year--then it goes away, so you don't really need to do anything but get rid of the leaves in question.

Yes--you won't "get rid of" pests--the winged adult moths will return next spring and lay more eggs. It is a leaf tier. I've never seen major damage. Just scout and remove.

Thanks everyone for your help. Okay, I'll just continue to remove those leaves. There's not too many so far. I think I may have caught them before it gets too bad. I really appreciate your quick and helpful replies.
