I don't know if this is what you are referring to or not, but check this thread to see if it helps. http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/roses/msg0520571627988.html?1

I think it is weather. I haven't fertilized at all this year and Neptune is confused. The old reliables like Touch of Class, Leana and both Gemini are holding centers just fine. Hot Princess hasn't bloomed yet. Landlady, split centers are when hybrid teas have two or more centers, instead of one high spiraled center. Also called "confused" center. It is not the same as proliferation (aka "vegetative growth").

Aha....thanks, Diane_nj :-)))

| Some are triggered by too much fertilizer, some by odd weather changes. Mostly, they're genetic. Some breeding lines have greater proclivities to split than others. Kordes Perfecta was notorious for split centers. It would be interesting to see if the roses you're having the issue with might share common ancestors and if any are bred from the Perfecta line. | I've heard that the Montreal Botanical Garden has a bed of Double Delight with perfect centers--a rose notorious for double centers in New England. I also heard that their secret was to adjust the PH of the soil to 7.0. Most of the soil in New England is acid--we started adding lime after getting soil test measurements of 6.0 and 5.2--even though roses from Canada don't seem to mind the lower PH. |

Kim, Zack, thanks, interesting stuff.

It's probably a genetic predisposition of the variety plus weather conditions. Some HTs never split, while others often have confused centers. I'm skeptical about fertilizer playing a role-I never heard of it being tested. Very likely this started as someone's guess and got repeated. Most exhibitors fertilize like crazy.

I exhibit and have never seen a correlation between fertilizing and split centers--holding off on fertilizer for X weeks before the bloom doesn't seem to help any on varieties prone to split centers.
