Was out in the HT section of the garden late today getting things ready to plant my 2 Louise Estes. Had the rake clearing the mulch back when all of a sudden the back of both legs started to burn. I thought I was in a fire ant mound at first, then I noticed these "ants" were flying. YELLOW JACKETS!!! You talk about doing a dance getting out of there. Two nasty stings on each calf. After my wife doctored me up a little I went out to the shop and grabbed Bayers Insectacide. 1/2 cup of "kill'em" in a 1 gal jug and fill it up with hot water. Went back up to the area where they were still flying around and dumped the entire gallon down the hole. Went back to my front porch and waited about 15 minutes. Trucked back up to the area of war and found nothing flying and about 100 dead Yellow Jackets on the ground around their entrance. Will dig the area out tomorrow and see what I can find. Long pants and long sleeve shirt just in case there are any still alive. I need to get those roses in their spots.

Gee - shouldn't you have used some soap spray, first? Or maybe hot pepper or garlic? Some borax powder might have worked, too. I've also heard a crushed up pack of cigarettes might help.

Sorry - I couldn't resist that. ;-) ;-)

I hope you're OK. It's happened to me before, along with taking a dog to the emergency vet - on two occasions. I can't speak for the rest of the country, but we would be in deep trouble in Georgia without "real" insecticides.

You make me cringe. I've been stung a few times over the years and it's not fun. There's some sort of wasp around here that flys low to the ground around dusk probably looking for insects. The old southern tradition of walking barefoot becomes a little less fun when I see that. Hope you heal soon.......Maryl

RE: ouch!!!

Yesterdays fun & games in the garden was the first time I've been hit in maybe 16, 17 years. I was living in Winter Haven, FL at the time. Bee's don't bother me at all. If I'm by a bloom with any type of bee, I'll put my hand next to the bloom to see if it will craw onto my hand. I think bee's are cool. Especially the big black & yellow bumble bee's. Now wasps are are different. If I see an aggressive type of wasp, I'll swat that bugger down and stomp him into the ground. I've got children on both sides of me that are in the garden all the time. I can't imagine a 3 yr old little "rug rat" stepping into that Yellow Jacket nest. That would destroy her interest in gardening. As for my stings, they burn and itch tonight. Big red welts on the back of each leg. I was out in the garden this morning and found 1 flying YK. I swatted him down and did an Indian War Dance on him (the Cherokee coming out of me). Decided to wait until tomorrow to dig the holes for my two Louise Estes :)

RE: ouch!!!

Ken, I'm sorry you got stung by yellow jackets. I hate those aggresive things. A couple of weeks ago I got stung by one on my middle finger. Needless to say, I was hesitant to show it to people. I try not to fly that middle-finger-flag. ;)

Hugs to you and Debbie! :)

re: btw

BTW, I've found it's best to deal with yellow jackets while they are sleeping (which is usually very early in the morning or at night). Surely don't want you to get stung again as I know how badly it hurts. :)

RE: ouch!!!

Sorry to hear that. We had a really big wasp nest under a big rhododendron--I was about to take it out--but something beat us to it--most likely a raccoon--took out half the nest one night, then wiped it out the 2nd.
