Hi all, I did a very, very, very bad thing. I bought a 5-gallon of this gorgeous rose at a local rose nursery and left it in its container for a week ... a week of 90+ temperatures, reflected off a light-colored wall. I planted Dark Night, watering the ground with my tears ;), trimmed off the dead canes and commenced intensive care, feeding, watering daily for two weeks (through the second heat wave), and now every other day. By "watering", I mean filling the basin and allowing it to drain 3-4 times. DN also gets watered when the entire bed gets its soaker hose treatment every week. Of the two canes remaining on DN, one is entirely green, the other brown but greenish in places. I don't see any new leaves. For what it's worth, Sexy Rexy went through the same trauma, and he is slowly recovering. Should I give up on this plant? I know it's beautiful, but I'm no longer sure it's the right rose for the spot. Apparently dark red roses fry in intense heat, and yellow would be better. On the other hand - I have put some work into it, and it would look amazing. Thanks, Sylvia

I'm surprised that one week in a container did so much damage. Did it not receive water? Dark Night has very thick petals that won't fry as easy as other red roses. The flowers on mine last quite a long time. It was potted for a little over a year before I planted it recently. You may need to shade yours during the hottest part of the day until it recovers.

Brittie, that was one week where the temps soared into the 100s during the day. The rose was against a west-facing wall. I watered it, but apparently not enough. I'd be happy to shade my Dark Night, if it actually grew any leaves ;). Thanks for the encouraging words,

If the one cane is still really green and the pith is good it will live. Whether or not it will ever become more than a one cane wonder is another story though. But one week isn't all that much time so I'd give it a while longer before I decided to ditch it.

Thanks, Seil, but the one cane isn't looking that good. I think the pith is dry. :( I'd have left the dead leaves on the plant if I'd known they would shade the canes. I feel like an even bigger idiot. File this under "My Most Stupid Gardening Mistakes." I think I'll dig the poor thing up and get another rose. And treat it well. Sylvia

Do not feel like an idiot! We have all done stuff like that! Chalk it up to experience. I , also don't think you have lost that rose. Just prune back the tops to good wood and give it good, semi-shaded, location. Dappled! And don't worry so much. I will bet it will come back. Keeping the good thoughts for you! Maybe turn a lawn chair over and use that as a screen from the hot sun!
