| Recently got a couple of Fragrant Clouds on fortuniana. The plants arrived in beautiful shape with a bloom that was coral orange and non-fragrant. I dis-budded and planted them, hoping against hope that the flowers had "lost" their fragrance in the shipping. The new buds are growing now and they have slightly feathery sepals ( no photos I'm afraid. I'll try to take some tomorrow ) and I'm thinking I got mislabeled plants. :-(
Hope these blooms are fragrant. I've wanted this rose forever. |

| Sorry Jerome, you've probably fallen victim to the Gypsy/Fragrant Cloud mixup. It happens all the time in the contract growers' fields. "It's orange, put Fragrant Cloud on it!" I can see why they would prefer Gypsy over Fragrant Cloud for production as Gypsy has better disease resistance, particularly mildew. It just isn't fragrant. Kim |

| Oh gosh. I'm going to hope against hope it's the right rose. I've wanted FC for years now. I'll keep you all posted when the buds blooom. |
|
| I just went out and smelled my FC, no smell whatsoever. Mine usually are very strong for a few days, then not much if at all. The few days are very worth it if I cut it and bring it inside! I also observed what I would consider feathery sepals on several buds, so it must not be out of the ordinary on this rose. |

| I've found the very few mail order sources for roses on Fortuniana to be very reliable and aboveboard. When those now stress-free plants bloom in the light and warmth of your garden, I'll bet that telltale knock-your-socks-off fragrance will leave no doubt that you got the right variety. Please keep us posted. |

| Even with stressed plants, if you cut an opening bud and open it indoors, you should be able to tell if the flower is highly scented (which the real Fragrant Cloud is) or not. "Feathery sepals" are highly variable with most roses. That's been one of the true pains in attempting to breed for crested sepals. Many will express sublimely feathered, crested sepals sometimes, but seldom as a regular trait and virtually never as a transmissible characteristic. Secret's Out, the whiter sport of Secret, has shown amazingly feathered, elongated sepals a few times, but more often than not, they revert to the plain old, plain old. I meant no disparagement against the possible source of Jerome's "Fragrant Cloud". Just stating what I have observed many times over many, many years. Very often, an "improved" version of a rose is offered as the rose. The "improved form" is most often a different rose. Gypsy can resemble FC to those who are not that familiar with the original, and it IS a healthier, often more vigorous plant. It is entirely possible the supplier obtained the variety from a source which supplied the incorrect rose, or accidentally confused them in their own budwood selection. It happens all the time. Kim |

| Two recent blooms. Mine is pretty dark orange on young bloom, then more coral when bloom matures. Fragrance is very strong: |

| show me a photo of the foliage jerome. the flower color varies widely with the weather and the young plant may not be ready to produce fragrance. |

| Thanks for your input. Jaxondel, I actually think the place I ordered from is a class organization, I got great service and had a really enjoyable conversation on the phone with one of the owners. I ordered really late in the season, and they told me to order earlier next year (and I plan on ordering from them again in February or so). I was very impressed with their expertise, kindness and the incredible packing job of the plants. Hoovb, I'll take a photo of the foliage and send that to you today. I'll keep you all posted. That li'l bud keeps gettin' bigger and bigger....fingers crossed here. |

| Great News!!! Hoovb looked at some photos I sent and declared that my - er our Fragrant Cloud is genuine! Happy as a Camper here in Orange County. |
