New rose - just noticed powdery mildew

Hello! I just planted a rose that unfortunately had powdery mildew - I bought it without noticing, and the store is too far away to return it.

So, I put it in the ground anyway, with lots of mulch in a deep hole, in full sun in a dry area with good drainage. I also cut off all the flowers and buds, since they were the mildewy-est.

Any other suggestions to stave off a full-on mildew attack? Should I go ahead and act like it's fully diseased and bring out the chem. warfare, or wait and see? Was it a horrible idea to cut the flowers off a stressed-out rose?

I have no other roses (this will be only my second try at a rose...the last one languished for years with a virus and finally expired this year. BUT I do have a beloved tuberous begonia patch about 50 feet away and I'd rather set this rose on fire than have its PM get my begonias!

Thanks!
