What in the world is this? Helpful or harmful?

Is the fellow in the photo beneficial or harmful? I haven't a clue what he is.

It's the aphids, they have me confused. One day they were the bane of my roses existence then their population declined to a manageable annoyance. I examined my rose bushes looking for beneficial insects but the only strange thing I found is this fellow.

Cheers Folks.

The white specks on the bud are aphid shucks left from molting, or else aphid mummies that were killed by tiny predatory wasps. It is perfectly normal (in North America anyway) for aphids to build up in spring, before the first roses open, and then decline as they are gobbled by beneficial insects. Roses also have an immune response to aphids and can run them off as the flowers open.

I don't recognize the other fellow, but if you observe for a while, you can see whether he is eating rosebuds or eating aphids.

Thanks Michael. I've been committing aphidcide all season. My fingers are stained with thier evil essence. I've witnessed aphid decline before but never so sharply. Within two days thier numbers were less than halved. This is my first year without pesticides so I'm hoping I've created a better environment for friendly pests.

I'm also hoping that larvae is friendly. I've left it alive hoping it's gobbling up aphids.

It may be beneficial and eating aphids. It looks an awful lot like a ladybug larva.

Here is a link that might be useful: ladybug larva article.

okay prof. that is what I also think. Leave him alone. They do look evil, but they are one of the good guys. And that is why you may be seeing all the aphid corpses around!
