Mary Rose (and others) is having problems again...

Hi All,

A few months ago, I was seeking help on my Mary Rose regarding its yellowish leaves. It turned out very well in the spring. Thank you all!

Now a few weeks ago, my Mary Rose have been having some brownish leaves, and some of my other roses also have this problem, although not as bad as Mary Rose. Please see the photos I took. Is this some kind of disease? Or insect damage? By the way, I live in NJ.

Any suggestion in terms of how to stop this?

Many thanks!

Leaves over on the left look like they may have been attacked by rose slugs (sawfly larvae). They may be gone by now (in which case, just wait for new leaves to form), but check a couple early mornings underneath the leaves, sometimes along the edge of the leaf, for tiny green worm-like things. Sometimes they are hard to see at first until your eyes adjust to squinting at them. If you find them, squish--or toss them into your yard (they aren't likely to find their way back to that rose). Usually after a couple weeks, a predator comes along and devours them and then the problem goes away.

Whether some of the leaf damage is from other causes also, I can't tell, but I'm sure there will be others along to give you advice.

Good luck.

Kate

We have rose slugs here from May until November. Some areas the rose slugs do not last near as long. Depends on what type and how many generations they produce.
Rose slugs can be found on the underside of the leaves but the curled rose slug feeds on the top of leaves.
Anyhow, you can pick them off with your fingers Or spray.
I spray our roses out front every 15 days with Spinosad as soon as I start seeing leaf damage in late Spring.
Safers insecticide soap also works. Follow directions as Spinosad can harm bees and do spot test spraying with either product as some rose leaves seem sensitive to the soap or oils...

Thank you all!

This Mary rose really bloomed well in the spring. And so far I have not seen any sign of BS. Ok, I will try get rid of those rose slugs!
