The Ingenious Mr Fairchild

Hello, people! This year my Ingenious Mr Fairchild rose has started growing very vigorously, become very bushy and putting out some long canes.I did not prune it much at all this year, due to the weird weather. It's not flowering much or very well, but I think that's due to the fact that I didn't get around to fertilizing it until way too late. Anyway, the plant has gotten to be so big and dense that I think I'll have to move it; it totally blocks the view of the rest of the garden.I'm even wondering if I could manage to train it as a small climber, say, on a tripod...Do any of you out there have experience with this rose, particularly those of you in warm climates (I'm in Italy,in the foothills of the Appenines, probably around a zone 8)? I'd greatly appreciate to hear your comments on this rose.Is the lack of flowering due to tardy fertilization, or lack of pruning? Might it be grown as a climber? Thanks in advance, bart

I have a young specimen but I can already see that this rose has long, limber canes which droop from the weight of the blooms. I can very well imagine this as a short climber where the rose can be supported while the flowers are allowed to hang down a little.

Thank you, Ingrid. I'm still hoping for more input, hopefully from someone who has a mature specimen...I was thinking:put it on a tripod? bart

Put it on a tripod. You won't be sorry.
