I need some help here. This is my second season with roses. This year I noticed something weird. Everyday bushes would have canes that had broken off . When I took a closer look, I found that the bushes each had a mass of branches that were coming out of a central location. At this location, the "crazy" branches are weak and that's why they're falling off. It's almost like they're cancerous, growing wildly. (these clumps are not the florets on the roses. These clumps are inside the bush). Each bush has at least two or three of these clumps. Does anyone know what this is and how to fix it? The roses weren't like this last spring when I planted them. Nor did they grow like this last year...only this spring. Help!

I don't know about the breaking off, but clumpy "witches' broom" growth sounds like herbicide damage or the terrible rose rosette disease. Please post sharply focused pictures, closeup and medium. I doubt that canes are breaking off by themselves. Groundhogs, dogs, children, basketballs etc. can break canes, or heavy rain when the rose is carrying heavy blooms.

Sounds like RRD--rose rosetta disease. Canes with RRD are very soft and do break off easily. They generally do not fall off, but, as Michael said, a passing force which a healthy rose can resist could easily detach them. Post a photo or take a sample to your county ag aget and get confirmation. If it is RRD, you will have to get rid of them.

Is it possible nanas is referring to candelabra, not witch's broom? This year, many of my roses, both in pots and in the ground, are sprouting many of these very tall floriferous extra stems. I have a Johann Strauss right now that probably has generated 100 blooms on all these extra stems.

I'm intrigued by the "candelabra" growth a lot of us are having this year! Any experts have an explanation? I have so many roses with this atypical growth this year!
