Rose uprooted

Yesterday as yard work was being done, inadvertenly my yard man pulled my Sundowner rose partially out of the ground. He quickly uprighted it and tamped it back into the ground. I then cut back all of the branches to about four feet, (this rose measured ten feet in height) the ground was wet from rain the night before, and it rained again last night, so I did not water it in. My question is did I do the right thing in cutting back the branches? I am really upset about this as the Sundowner was one of my best bloomers. I know I am asking after the fact but I would like some opinions please as to what should have been done.

In hot weather, you did the right thing by reducing the foliage area.

How does one accidentally uproot a mature rose? It makes me wonder if gophers had chewed the roots off,

grief, I was wondering too - I would have to get a landscaper's bar out to budge a 10foot rose so unless said yardman was driving a mechanical digger....?
Hope all is well (and don't worry about cutting back - be better next year).

It's unfortunate it happened but it sounds as if you should be able to save it with what's been done. Don't put any "elixers" or "vitamins" or anything on it. Just good, old water, until you see new growth popping from it. Sundowner should be just fine. Kim

Thanks all for the input and as to how it was uprooted believe me I asked and asked and all I got was mumbles about a hose, an ATV and a trailer hitch dragging...anyway I am glad I did the right thing in cutting it back.

just a thought - my little peach tree snapped at the graft union (long woeful tale) and the fruity folk suggested shading, as well as cutting back so the peach is now sitting under a large umbrella....so, if you can erect some temporary shade structure, I think this will also relieve some of the transpiration stress - Hope the workers were suitably contrite but at least they told you and didn't just stamp it back in and sneak off.
