 o
aphids and rose immune system

In the past I presented published research papers that roses take care of the aphid problem themselves.

The present research presented in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences puts the above behavior in terms of the chemistry of the plants immune system.

Also of interest (to me) is that Nature is using the same immune system chemistry in plants as it uses in animals: “GroEL was known previously to trigger immunity in animals,” said Kaloshian, a member of UC Riverside’s Institute for Integrative Genome Biology. “However, our finding that it induces immunity in plants is new."

Very cool.

I've never had any big number of aphids on the roses after the buds start opening on the first flush. They just clear out. It seems the plants don't get serious about defending themselves until the flowers are threatened.

Good news! I 've never really worried too much about aphids. They seem to have their time and then go away pretty much on their own.
